Epic 3, the ancient and classical eras
My first decision is to move closer to the cows. There are to many points tied to population, and that is the maximum growth spot. This variant IMHO forced the first build to be a worker. I start off researching animal husbandry to get the cows on-line. I popped the wheel from a hut. I was the founder of Hinduism.

I am not use to snaky continents. I am surprised how much land there is. I am more surprised to met France up north. To make matters worse France builds the Oracle and snags Confucianism creating attitude problems with my only neighbor. I am shocked to see him found Taoism in the BC time frame. I am in deep trouble on the tech front despite financial.

I watched the Great Library get built in a foreign land at 305 AD. I never had a chance, as I hadn't researched literature yet. That one really hurts my tech pace. I finally entered the medieval era in 800 AD.

Epic 3, the medieval era

I can't believe it when Islam is founded in a distant land. The overseas civs are clearly ahead of me. Just as I am building my first caravel Roosevelt shows up. His tech lead is absurd.

France declared war in 1364 AD. I was already building up a stack on this border, so this doesn't bother me too much. My first capture is Chartres. This is the Taoist holy city with a shrine already built. Now I just need to start spreading Taoism to take advantage of it. This will be my first source of dyes after border expansion. I get screwed marching to Besancon with catapults killing Axes more then once. I hate the RnG sometimes. I wind up signing peace in 1430 AD after capturing just one town. France got longbows just after the war started, and axes are to weak against them.

During this war I find the last civ of Egypt. I am disappointed to find I can already trade maps with her. This confirms that I am suffering from a tech deficit. I get a laugh when I get the circumnavigation bonus, as I wasn't even trying for it. I just got lucky that the map trade with Egypt filled in the gaps.

As you can see from the population picture, I am in terrible shape. Despite financial I am number 3 in GNP.

The tech pace continues to be frustrating, as Egypt discovers Liberalism before I even have education.

I finally enter the renaissance era in 1571 AD.

Epic 3, the renaissance era

I lost the race for the Taj Mahal by 6 turns. This whole game has been feeling to far behind in tech despite Monarchy. If I had only taken Besancon with the marble...
The AIs start adopting emancipation while I still need several techs. This forced luxury taxes to go up 10% further keeping the science deficit going.

The second war with France begins in 1694 AD. I was getting suspicious of the troop movements near his border. Of course, he again forces the war when I am close to declaring. I still needed more pikes in the stacks, and had several under construction. Amiens is the first to fall. Grenoble falls shortly afterwards. I get Besancon with the marble, but saw my first knight. I am again running into tech edge problems. My happiness situation continues to deteriorate due to a second civ getting emancipation. 50% culture rate is an unsustainable trend. Avignon falls and I will have spices. I sign peace picking up music, as I need time to get emancipation to kill the misery penalty. At this point I concede I have no chance at a top spot in the results.

I immediately suffer a 2 turn anarchy to get emancipation in place the second I discover it. The number of miserable people is just too much.

France as a neighbor is getting tiresome. 1790 AD see another war begin while I was trying to build sufficient infrastructure to recover from worsening tech deficit. Dijon quickly falls, as I had an attack stack sitting near the town. I know wartime isn't optimal for a GA with a potential WW crunch, but I start one anyhow. I badly need more production to get better progress against France. Cherbourg is the next to fall. Tours is the first useful city, as it gives me a source of gems. It has another bonus in that it shortens the northern border with France.

Sorry you didn't get to finish LK. That's an impressive 5AD population mark though - what did you do to get it so high? Outside of Kylearan's game, that 846 thousand is about the best anyone who has posted so far has managed to do. [Image: smile.gif]

I don't remember all of the details on the pop push. Among others were ASAP granaries; all cities governors were emphasis growth, lots of early MM, hyper expansion pushing the economy hard earlier, and getting religion to cities for the extra happy help.

I did better then I thought on pop with that comment...
