So I wrote a Wesnoth campaign

Okay, I've updated the code with nearly all the changes suggested to me by TBS's report. I want to playtest it myself a bit more first to make sure I didn't break anything accidentally; I'll hopefully post the updated files ~tomorrow. The changes are a few additions to the dialog in scenario 2, an additional recruiting option at the start of in scenario 3, eliminating an error message that popped up under fairly unusual and specific conditions in scenario 2, and a change to a later scenario analogous to the change for scenario 3. Oh, and fixing another bug with no gameplay effect that I noticed in working on the above changes. Thanks again; I'll try to get the new files posted as soon as I'm sure they work better than the old ones!

I'm glad I tested that:  The changes I made didn't break anything, but an important one also didn't work.  I fixed that, and then it did break something, which I've now fixed as well.  The changes mentioned above should now all be in place and working.

Also note:  Existing saves made with older versions should actually be fully compatible with this version of the campaign, although you'll only see the updated changes in scenarios later than your save.  So if your save is from scenario 1 from the first-posted version, you won't have the bonus gold fix, but everything else should work with the new version; if you use your last save from scenario 2 before winning, scenario 3 will still work under the new rules; etc.  (Actually, it occurs to me that if you are using the very first version I posted, a couple of the portraits will look goofy in the scenario where your save was made, but they should look normal in later scenarios.)

The new version is attached to the first post in this thread, replacing the older version, and can just be unzipped into the same place as before, replacing the old files.  I hope the campaign remains fun to play; thanks for your patience:  These are more changes than I hoped would be needed, but I'm really glad they were caught!

I don't think I can beat scenario 3. I tried sneaking the original grunt and Brignab up north around the side tunnels. They found the spy and then I think I got a bit lucky getting through the wolves so quickly. Still Brignab and the spy only just reach the exit(I assume it is behind the spider and its webs?) as the 30 turns is running out. They need help and time to get through those last enemies.

The reinforcements can clear a path through the initial trolls when they finally arrive, but even wolfriders can't make it through to the other side of the map in time to help.

Wow, thanks again for trying things out and describing your experience, TBS!

It sounds like you using the original campaign files I posted and/or playing from a scenario 3 save, right?  After reading your comments, I added the ability to recruit one unit per turn even before reinforcements arrive (and 100 starting gold) to scenario 3, and I uploaded the modified version of the campaign (which is now the one attached to the first post).  If you still want to try it out and have whatever your last save file is from scenario 2 is, you could load that, replay the last turn(s) of scenario 2, and try scenario 3 with more-immediate reinforcements.  If you already tried this and it wasn't enough though (or if you don't think it will be with only one new unit recruitable each turn) I'll have to think about other/additional options.  And of course if you're not interested in playing further, having already explored the map, I understand - and I'm sorry it didn't turn out to be winnable on that playthrough!  Hopefully the changes I've made (more information/hints in the scenario 2 dialog, including a hint about saving the Icewolf Pass village until late if you think you'll be short on time, plus the recruiting option in scenario 3) will help with that, and I'm still thinking about reducing the xp requirements too.

Oh - and if you want to try out the later scenarios but don't want to replay scenario 3, let me know; I should be able to generate a save that starts there, and if you want to use the same units you had from your playthrough and you upload one of the saves from your game, I believe I can get them onto the artificially-created save's recall list too!

Regardless, thank you so much for everything you've described already, and for trying out the game!  Your comments and descriptions have been tremendously helpful!

Yeah, looks like I played through the old version.  bang

I played through scenario 2 again to get a new save. It went quite a bit better this time, I think the infighting orcs did a much better job of killing each other. I used the same strategy as before, but Fort Vreeg was much easier to capture and Fort Straalk was completely wiped out by the Grakhmol. I finished on turn 27/33 this time. I also upgraded Brignab and Galroth!

I'll try scenario 3 later, think I sent 4 units through this time, though neither of the two leaders. I do seem to be able to recruit from the start at least.

Just wanted to check in once more to see if anyone's played any further with this one, and if so, if you have any thoughts (loved it, hated it, with or without a reason, etc.) - thanks to all who posted here, especially TBS for the detailed thoughts and haphazard, naufragar, and Cyneheard for catching things I was taking for granted or otherwise somehow just plain missed!
