this only happens at the highest level of difficulty (which only 8% of players play on and those people tend to care more about MP anyway). As you get better at Age of Wonders you get better at snowballing. This, along with the AI not attacking enough so they fall behind, inflates the importance of earlier turns to the degree that they are they only turns that matter. It takes 15 turns to do the quest and you start pulling away from AI at around turn 20. There just isn't enough time for a reasonable quest to properly pay out at the highest level of difficulty.

Picked this one up around release, it's pretty fun but it has no challenge at all. Say what you will about the civ 5 and 6 AI but at least they attempt to go for a win and can do... okay if left to their own devises (and honestly there has never been a strategy game AI that can deal with an optimised military rush or a timing push). Still it can be fun in the same way as something like Stellaris, where you just treat it like a nation/people scale RPG.
