Epic 4 - Summary / Results

pholkhero Wrote:Many people like to watch the TV spoilers...

I bet most of them haven't thought it through, though. How many of them have tried avoiding the spoilers to see if they enjoy the stories more without them? Some people read ahead to the last chapter of a book, or tune in only for the last couple innings or the last quarter of a ballgame, but in my mind these people are something less than wholly dedicated fans. YMMV.

Spoilers change the nature of any experience, disrupting suspense. Since we are a strong anti-spoiler community in general, it should surprise no one that I'd prefer we steer clear of spoilers here, too, at least during reporting week.

I applaud mostly_harmless's efforts in the original list of Epic players and their games. I do agree that spoilerish info could wait a week or so.

However, I think it would be helpful (if some kind soul like m_h wants to do it) to make a list of the reports as they come in. Something like:

Epic 4 Report links
Sirian: report and thread
Iustus3: report and thread
Sullla: report thread
...

That way, you can quickly navigate to either the player's report or to the discussion thread about that game. In some cases, e.g. Sullla's game, the thread contains the full game report.

After a week or so, these could be reorganized based on the outcomes. For Epic 4, the outcome categories would likely be: victories, incomplete victories, stalemates, and valiant defeats. (I think the first two should be grouped together, but that's just my opinion.)

Just a thought.

In the beginning of the original Civ 3 Epics, only players with their own webspace would get their report linked to in the results. People who posted their report "only" in the forum did not get linked to. I didn't like that, so when I started to collect results for Gris (and which I still would do if at the end of the week after report day there are no results yet rolleye ), I linked to all players' reports, regardless whether they posted in the forum or on their own site.

A second link to the discussion thread in the forum for people with their own site would be neat, but would somewhat clutter up the official results page IMHO, and I honestly don't really see a big advantage over the forum, where every report of the current closed Epic/Adventure can quickly be found. But if people would like a post with such a list as you described, I could do this the next time I collect results - but only at the end of the week. wink

I agree. I think a link to just the report is fine for the official results page.

The list I propose would be generated during the first couple days of posting--like mostly_harmless did--when it might be convenient to have a list of game reports (so you can quickly find them) and a nearby link to the corresponding thread (so you can send a quick congratulations or comment to the author).

True, it doesn't save much time, but it is a non-spoiler list that the interested/motivated poster could start work on by the end of the first day of reporting for an event.

Whoa. That last sentence ended in way too many prepositional phrases. 8)

TV & Films are so badly over-trailered these days and it's so difficult to avoid. I get very frustrated by having to switch channels at a moments notice just to avoid learning something I'd rather have discovered in chronological order within the episode's context.

For those in America; my pet peeve is the new series of Stephen King stories on TNT; how can you build suspense, tension and an air of otherworldliness - staples of King's writing - when you've already seen scenes from halfway through the story!? rant

I've also realised that I very rarely go to the cinema to watch a Comedy film these days, mostly because I know that I've seen most of the best jokes in the trailers ... and seen them so often that they're just not funny anymore!

Anyway, enough of that!

Can't you just use the forum for that? I mean the reports forum lists all the threads, I tend to start from the oldest one on the list, open the thread in another tab and then open the report in another tab if it's on a webpage. Then when I'm done reading the report I shut that tab and I'm back in the thread reading what the comments are (and occassionally making my own, but I'm a lurker by nature smile ). Then I shut that & I'm back at the list, and ready for the next report. Mind you, it can get a little confusing as stuff moves up & down the list between sessions of reading reports, but it doesn't take very long to find the next one, and that wouldn't matter at all for those cherry-picking, anyway nod

I do the same when reading reports, and I wish the forum software would keep track of which threads I've read individually (like in the LL, for those who know it). Here, once I've visited the forum, the software simply marks all threads as read, regardless whether I've opened them or not. For the general discussion forum this isn't so bad, but for the tournament reports forum it is - when 10 new reports are there, I know I won't read them all in one session. But when I come back later, all reports are marked read. frown

I'm not sure - CFC's forums are vBulletin & there's definitely something different about how threads are marked read. It's not if you've not read it then it's still marked unread, but it's also not marked read if there've been no new messages since you last logged on. It might be that things stay 'unread' for a week - I can see a thread I've never read with last message on 7 Jul is marked read, but one with last message on 8 Jul is marked unread.

It may be a version thing - I notice they're running 3.5.2 and this forum is 3.0.5. But my guess is it's settings - the only other vBulletin place I go I think behaves like this one & it's 3.5.4 (it's pretty low traffic though and I tend to be totally up-to-date, so I'm not 100% sure).
