Hah, I did the exact same thing of Great Scientist into Philosophy into a brokerage slingshot.
My game trailed yours for space by about 20 turns. Some of that was due to missing the Liberalism freebie, but more of it was because I declined to conquer another civ. Civ 4 has taken many steps to reduce the snowball of additional territory, but later in the game with a solid economic foundation, it is the right method to speed your own research. The second core doesn't come anywhere near doubling your productivity as it did in Civ 3, but it can boost it by a good quarter or more.
Yeah, doing an efficient war of conquest is worth it as late as 1500.
Although my main reason for deciding to attack Hatty was not launching faster, but to take out some frustration after all the irritating demands she made earlier in the game.
Very nice game.
I need to learn to use specialists more, my use of great people is almost non-existant. Do you think you avoided war early by constantly switching back to no-religion? (Hatty attacked me in 760 AD). -Iustus
Yeah, I definitely think going back to No State Religion helped keep me out of trouble with Hatty. I had already refused a couple of her demands to stop trading with Saladin and didn't want to provide her with any further motivation to attack me.
