theGrimm's embarrassed Epic 6 confession

Sullla Wrote:Honestly, I don't think it was "unlucky" (no offense intended, of course smile). You really are taking your life into your hands if you start with a worker out of the gate in an Always War game! I'm shocked by how many people did that and got away with it. Sitting around with a totally unprotected capital for 20 or more turns? When everyone is at war with you? A "bold" move to be sure, but perhaps not the wisest! smile

I've heard Sirian say several times that the AW in CIV is "different" than in Civ III, where the opponents would send units willy nilly at you. Here they build stacks when they are ready, which isn't going to be at the beginning of the game. That's what I based my Worker first strategy on, although I did keep the Scout close to home to avoid attracting any unwanted attention.

I'm tempted to try several random Pangaea maps (Noble) and go Worker -> Warrior every time (fortifying the Scout) just to see what happens.

If they see that you have no defending units in your capital, they WILL walk in and kill you, even if a warrior has been set to the "explore" AI mission. I've had AIs start right on top of me before in Always War, and others who were playing the same start (with worker first) were pushing up daisies before 3500BC. smile

Normally, when I play a game, I analyse the start, decide on a plan A, B and C, and then play especially the first few turns with great care.

Had I planned it, I would mostly likely have gone worker first till archery, then switched to an archer ASAP, THEN finished the worker, as a nice balance between "farming" and "fighting".

I won't deny the smoke , though. It makes a nice counterpoint to "3500BC, met Gandi...3200BC, killed Gandi..." lol

I built a worker first as well. My scout was somewhat close, and I just did not feel that threatened. In fact, it was a long, long, long time on my game before I made contact with anyone.

I am posting this for those who think that theGrimm was just unlucky :

3580 BC means 14 turns. From the reports shots, it seems like he took the shortest path possible. Lesson learnt nod

I'm amazed on how many players went with worker first. It's a first build I would have never thought about. Too bad it didn't pay off for you. We play for the challenge.

A short report with a take-home lesson: nice. Does anyone know if an AI scout (not warrior) can walk into your undefended city and leave only ruins for future generations?

Scouts cannot attack anything. They can only defend (if I'm not mistaken).

Correct, scouts can't pillage either (explorers are the same way). All they can do is scout. smile
