fixed that already...sorry about that

Well done ThERat. The early aggression with elephants and cats paid off well for an early domination date.

Good job.

I agree completely that the design of the higher difficulties is unfun. That is not how I would have had it, but it wasn't my call.

I'm glad that this particular scenario worked for you. smile

I've never seen Alex be so passive. Just out of curiosity, did you have a very large military? I suspect from playing RB22 with you that you did and that acted as a deterent (i.e. he didn't have any ripe targets to take).

For your opening, I have:

Research Path: Fishing -> Mysticism -> Hinduism -> ? -> Hunting -> Archery
Build Queue: Worker -> ?
Second City: 1900 B.C. West of Pigs

ok, I checked my save for darreljs...

my techs were:
fishing - AH (for the UU) - pottery (must have cottages on the flood plains) - mysticism - poly (yes very late indeed in 2410BC) - mining- hunting - archery - BW -sailing

My research path was dictated by the thought that I need proper defense, but I think I didn't build up that much, enough though to not invite Alex

I also checked the last save avaliable in 650AD when I was ripping the fellow apart and all he did was building infrastructure, how dumb is that?

Wow, that was different than I thought! In my game I also skipped religion for some time, and Alex gladly chased them (in fact Judaism was founded before Hinduism)! Thanks for taking the time to update the research path for me smile

Good game.

I think the ridiculous city maintenance costs were actually down to the map size in this case, not the difficulty.

I may be biased as a player who started playing civ4 on emperor, but I think emperor is a more balanced level in that the AI puts some pressure on you in terms of early military and particularly wonder completion dates, so you have to focus more to get that Oracle or Pyramids and sacrifice some early expansion to do so.

I understand the reasons for not wanting to run most events at emperor+, but I think it would be more interesting if there was at least some pressure on the players early to increase the tension in the early game; maybe giving the monarch-level AI better starting locations than the player, or a couple more initial units/techs so that they can go for Wonders more quickly, could achieve that without having to ratchet the difficulty level up. People are getting pyramids much too easily, and this isn't a good thing.

It seems like Alex snagging out the copper off you just accelerated his downfall. Think of it as a free settler, worker and city improvements smile
It was a nicely brought up domination thumbsup
