The game seemed like a good challenge, so i played that game. I thought about going for domination in this game instead of the economically way. With the AI having those lots of techs ahead, i thought the only way the human have to beat AI is by war. The AI still have some problems in wars, like bombarding all the city defenses sown instead of attacking it when the city has a weak garrison (actually, this happended in my game he game once).
So i beelined to military techs and discovered no copper and an iron far from the capital. In the short term it is ugly to have an early city so far, but i had to get the iron and there was founded the 3rd city.
With iron in hands i easily tooked Timbuktu, though it had longbows yet, around 600BC, Mansa was now vulnerable and i signed peace and declared war some more times to took his techs. Mansa died in 1505AD
I forced Catherine to have only the capital along her whole game, and she built some nice wonders in Moscow to lose them and collapse the "empire" around 700AD.
Shaka was the most difficult enemy, he had crossbows and macemen to fight against my swords, pults, chariots and axes. I waas close to lose a captured city (uMgungundlovu) but i managed to defend it with bowmans and later shaka was no more in 1270AD.
The huge maintenance and military costs were supported by lots of courthouses and some income cities, such as Moscow.
Around 1000AD i got the first tech (engineering) an AI (GK) didn't have, and in 1470AD i was the first to discover liberalism and got steel!
With the posession of the whole continent territory, cannons!!! and cuirassiers, all i had to do was to cross the ocean to fight agaisnt GK, found some cities in islands and win the game by domination. But the turns were too long (sometimes 10min) due to army management, and the game become boring.
I retired in 1575AD.
