What's going on in Sumeria?

Sorry, first time I've ever used spoiler tags!

Really though, I'm just having to ride it out and hope noone picks on me until I get to Feudalism soon. I've been royally screwed out of metal and land (at least pre Astronomy) so I just have to hope everyone else fights other people.

Both my neighbours have metal whereas I have no reachable source, plus the iron island is too small for sharing (which is supposedly not the case elsewhere, talking to Cyneheard). So until I have a non-metal based defence (Longbows), I'm screwed. My power rating is near the top so I'm don't look as much of a pushover as I am, but I do expect an attack at some point by Ad Hoc & meatbalz may well join in.

Cyneheard just built the AP in the name of the Hindu, so that's a nice bonus for me, but he will charge me the gold for his cities from my shrine, which I agreed to.

I'm sorry Ky, but placing the seemingly only pre-astronomy metal in a place where whoever stumbles upon it first gets a major advantage is not balanced. And yes, I have searched around my entire island and found no more islands to settle!

What is also REALLY annoying is that meatbalz gave a FREE IRON to his other neighbour who's power rating was in the doldrums I believe. I offered to buy iron from people and got nothing, and now someone gets it for free. Ridiculous

Let's see how long I last!

I cannot honestly believe this!

I have in the last couple of turns, popped both Copper AND Iron randomly from mines on my homeland!

My game may not be totally ruined just yet! Especially with Feudalism in as well!

Where was this luck before?

Ad hoc finally declared war on me this turn.

His visible units (I have city visibility via EP spending) should not be too threatening as I have 3 triremes nearby to take down the galleys that will transport them and I am pretty sure that he cannot reach my landmass in one turn.

Though the power graph suggests he *may* have a hidden stack somewhere, but I cannot place it anyway so I am pretty sure I should be ok for a couple of turns of extra whipping to top up my defences further.

Lets see if I can exorcise some military demons from my earlier PBEMs! Hope so as power graph wise we are pretty level.

Well here's a war update for you.

Ad hoc's invading stack should be cleaned up next turn.

He invaded with 2 swords, 2 phalanx, 3 spears and a catapult (8 units, 4 galleys).

Last turn I attacked out with two shock longbows and took out his top Sword and lost one. His ships were surrounded by triremes and galleys so no reinforcements were going to get through. One galley killed but took half my trireme's health.

This turn, ad hoc attacked the 1/2 health trireme and escaped after losing one more galley.

Then, I attacked out at his stack with 3 Longbows (1 shock, 2 C1) and took out his other sword and both phalanx. A Great General was born nearby so i combined him with a newly trained longbow to make a C1/Shock/Leadership/Morale unit that could reach his stack and took out his catapult. I then attacked out with a Shock spear which died but crippled one of the remaining spears, and sent out a stray chariot to see if it could get lucky and weaken his other spear so my shock HAs could clean up. It died with too little damage done.

Forces in range:

4 Longbows in city (2 will be healed up by Shock promo, GG and 3 promo L'bow which will likely keep its promo - all slightly hurt but will be healed by promotion) + 2 more completed in nearby cities within reach.
5 Horse Archers (4 double promo, 1 single promo)
2 Chariots
1 Archer

Ad Hoc

3 spears (all combat 1 - health of 0.8, 3.0 & 4)

Only things which may get galleyed across if lucky, a sword and some catapults (HA fodder)

These are the losses so far:

Me:

2 Chariots (1 was keeping an eye on his island)
1 Longbow
1 Trireme
1 Spearman

Ad Hoc:

2 Swords
2 Galleys
2 Phalanx
1 Catapult

I have just reached Construction so I will have catapults to defend with too should he decide to continue the war. I will send him an email asking him if he wants to talk, but if not, I have the forces in place to destroy his remaining spears quickly enough, and should be able to hold against any major stacks as he still has to go past the Trireme party (can't believe he never had any - only just bringing one around the corner now).

I also still have EP visibility on all his cities which he can send a fleet at me from - that is giving me a big advantage as I am pretty sure what's coming. Without that, I may not have done so well so far.

Good Defense Shows also that you didn't need any metals at all as your LB did the job quite nicely.

Another quick update:

Nothing much has happened - ad hoc doesn't want peace so I cleared out his 3 spears with no losses and he has retreated his remaining boats. Hilariously, I can see all the units stood around the boats - Maces & Crossbows so I know exactly what will be coming at me (when he build a ton more galleys)

I have just completed Machinery myself so I can start building Crossbows now for extra defensive advantage to counter the Maces along with my Longbows and Catapults.

A stop the war message came up for me in the AP chair, so I took it and it should pass so I will have some enforced peace to keep my army and navy topped up and see if he dares a second attack.
