Is it possible to change the map size?

As far as I can tell the 'land size' is just the average size of each land mass rather than the entire map size.

Is there any way to reduce the entire map size?

I tend to lose interest when I have to march loads of units across the map every turn.

No way to change map size. But you may use map editor to make the map with a compact lands.

Thanks for the information, any idea of how to do that? I'm a bit new to this.

Also is it possible to mod the game to change the map size directly somehow?

You can only make landmass less and group islands together. The whole map size remain unchanged anywhere.

With enough low level assembly coding you could change the map size, but it's not exactly a small project.

I disagree. The hardcore changes so massive that its easiest to develop game anew instead of catch all related functions.

That falls under the category of 'enough'. It's a nonsensical thing to try, but it's not technically impossible.
