GalCiv II "Pre-Load"

GalCiv II will be out next week. I ordered electronically (something I couldn't afford to do with GC1 because I was still on dialup at the time!)

I got my notice today for the "Pre-Load", which is a chance to grab most of the game files NOW, and only have to get the executables or whatever other minority of critical files they're holding back until release day, next week.

I have stayed pretty far away from GalCivII -- farther than Soren, as it turns out. I have no idea what exactly to expect other than the big picture stuff and some screens (which look rather good, actually.)

Anybody who wants more info can check out: http://www.galciv2.com/

No idea what, if anything, we will do for this game at RB. Depends on how it is received. smile

I'm not sure whether to get it or not - I never really got past the stage of just doing things pretty much at radom and seeing what happened with GalCiv I, but the previews I've seen for the sequel do like rather nice, and you guys seem to have enjoyed the first one, which is a good sign. I think I'll wait and see what you guys and reviewers make of it. If there's enough interest and I do get it, I'd definitely be interested in any newbie-training things anyone was organising - I did read the start of a GalCiv I SG (organised by Arathorn?) but it was never finished frown

EDIT: Oh what the heck, it's only £18 to preorder it off play.com (same price I paid for Civ 4 - I love that site smile)

I've followed it off and on and looking forward to playing the game whether or not RB picks it up or not.

Already done the preload. Looking forward to next week!
On average, everybody thinks they are above average.

Same here. It's been a while since I last played GalCiv, but I'm looking forward to seeing what has been improved in the new version. Hopefully there will be a few SGs started at least.

Same four victory conditions. I hope the AI can play the Culture/Influence game this time around.

Same five "resources", and same stackable gameplay with them, and with starbases.

Mostly the same Trade Goods and wonders, but some changes having to do with the "Ascendancy-style" planetary regions.

Build your own ships using some simple principles, instead of predesigned ships.

I'm "Pre-Load"ed now. We'll see how it goes next week. smile

Ooh. There's a short video demo of the interface, map, engine at galciv2.com -- Brad gives a brief guided tour. It's informative in ways that stills and text are not, so I recommend checking it out. It ran on Media Player for me.

A couple of funny lines in there. smile

I'm going to start up galciv2 SG's over at civ fanatics regardless if rb has interest or not.

Only scratched the surface as there's no sulla caliber walkthrough up that I can see, but amazing it's an amazing game so far. Make no mistake, this is a strategy game ala moo1, not a broken tactical level game like moo2.

Those looking for the next 4x game that features smashem up manual ship combat can skip this title. If you love moo for the sliders and the grand strategy, give the demo a shot.

Cheers!
