Darrell's Epic VII Report

I really wanted to bring up my Epic VII game in Sulla's Epic VI report thread, but it would have been spoilerish. I used the same tactic (albeit the naval version) and wasn't sure if it was an exploit. I'm still not. Let's face it, there are many ways to take advantage of the AI, and I believe this one garnered so much attention simply because it wasn't subtle. Anyway, the report can be found here:

Congratulation to the victory.
Although I do not think that naval-blockading off Alex for an eternity is an exploitive strategy, I think some players will compare it to parking an archer next to an AI city. However, as I said before and I am reassured by your own comments, these tactics will become pretty boring for both the player and the report reader and will therefore become less used in the RB community.
Nevertheless, a nice win. I suppose domination would have been possible a bit earlier to you pursuing galleons and settlers more stricter?

that's an interesting strategy really....wouldn't have thought it's possible.

Yeah. You have to get moving on it, apparently. Catching him before he got off the home island was extremely bold.

The strategy was well conceived and finely executed. I think it could only work in a 1v1 or something close to it, although one might successfully blockade galley passage along a pangaea or large continent.

Great report. Sorry the game wasn't as much fun. Didn't eat up a lot of your time, though.

One of the challenging things for me going forward will be designing events in ways that paper over some of the holes in the AI's capabilities.

An excellent use of the blockade, and you won the Battle of Trafalgar!

Nice strat. I'm impressed you managed to deny even Corinth.

What did you use to do the dotmap on the first page? That's the best looking one I've ever seen.

That was different, and very impressive! Lots of food for thought, there.

nice game - well executed.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Amazing strategy. I would have never thought of it. Without being about to expand, Alexander was quite an easy opponent. Really, all you had to do was keep building, improving, and settling everywhere while Alex was trapped on his small island.

Thanks for the comments, as always smile

Generally speaking I had an advantage in this game because I play a lot of Duel maps. I did not really expect to catch Alex before he settled off island, that was very lucky. I did rush to get the blockade up as fast as possible, but I was prepared to raze any cities he had founded using Catapults.

@uberfish - Powerpoint. I made fat cross template a while back using transparency, and I just keep re-using it. I can send you the "source" if you like smile

@Sirian - The game was fun, the early expansion curve optimization was a blast, and I enjoyed it even more knowing I would get to compare it to everyone else. The fact that the second phase of the game wasn't as fun as others had was my fault for the strategy I chose frown
