Hello there,
After moving to Poland I've had some problems getting hold of games. Most of what is published here is translated into Polish making them useless for me as I need an original English version.
I used to buy from online stores in England, but those I used to use either doesn't ship to Poland or doesn't have what I'm looking for. Since finding a proper store that also ships to other EU countries is a bit of a jungle I figured I'd ask the Europeans here where you usually buy from
Stores in England/Ireland would of course be optimal, but ones in Germany should also be able to work... as long as they sell English versions I can read German, so navigating the webpages shouldn't be a problem.
Currently I'm thinking about some older ones, namely Hearts of Iron 2 and, possibly, Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun (or something like it... both from Paradox). And yes, I used to play Europa Universalis
Anyway, all help is welcome as even E-Bay has struck out

I searched for Hearts of Iron 2, but couldn't find it anymore at the stores. I then decided to buy it online (at a Dutch site). I ordered it several weeks ago and I'm still waiting for it to arrive. They send me an e-mail saying that Paradox is very slow in delivering new copies of old games. Besides, I didn't find many sites that still sell those games.
I guess I will have to be patient.
I heard that you can buy the games also via direct download, but if you also want the CD and manual, I guess that is not an option.
Good luck with your search,
Berrie

Hi,
Harleqin Wrote:Stores in England/Ireland would of course be optimal, but ones in Germany should also be able to work... Heh, I wish you luck finding such a store in Germany. We have a very stupid law in effect for some years now that automatically rates non-German games as "only suitable for ages 18+ or older". Companies only request a more accurate rating for German versions, so the foreign versions stay at "18+". This forces online stores to verify that the customer is actually that old, so you have to send in a copy of your passport to prove that. In fact, you cannot even have a look at what English games the store offers before having sent in your passport! That makes searching for a particular game, let alone comparing prices, a really fun experience...
All that, and the fact that most people are content with (badly translated) German versions, leads to most stores not even bothering to try to import English versions. CIV has been very nice in that regard, as the English, German, French and what-not versions are the same; you can switch languages in-game. Thanks Firaxis!
So the bottom line is, in Germany you have to find a store that a) accepts payment from outside Germany, b) ships to other countries, c) has the English version of the game you want in the first place, and d) is willing to go through the hassle of verifying your age (or skipping the procedure since you're not German). Er...good luck.
It has been so much easier to buy English versions of games in the past...Yay for globalization.

Anyway, all help is welcome as even E-Bay has struck out Amazon UK has a used copy of Vikky and the recent expansion is download only (which I've bought last weekend but not fired up so far). There's one on Amazon.de that's without the box...

Thanks guys
Swiss,
I noticed the one on Amazon and was somewhat tempted. I just find amazon to be pretty expensive shippingwise, but I might not have a choice. I'll need to pick out a few books at the same time though.
Kylearan,
I knew a lot of games are translated into German, but I didn't realize the market is that hopeless there. That is indeed bad news
Berrie,
I think the manual will be handy for such complicated games. Europa Universalis II would have been close to hopeless without it. Also, due to my somewhat unstable internet connection I prefer not downloading anything and risk losing everything due to some technical error.
Well, I actually managed to find Hearts of Iron 2 in a Danish store and it is listed as in stock. I'll need to get in touch with them to figure out if their shipping price is acceptable

They do request that you get in touch with them for shipping out of Denmark, but I'd expect it to be in the 5-15 euro range.

That was the one I had in mind, though I think there was another one with it as well. I used http://www.spilpriser.dk to check who might have it and at what prices.
Another store I looked at handled foreign shipping at around 40 kr. As I said, I'll need to get in touch with them as 10 euros is completely out of whack and more than I'm interested in.
Amusingly enough, HoI2 + expansion is available here for 10 pounds... but in a useless versions translated to Polish

Anyway, it seems that Paradox Interactive is willing to sell it through their own webshop for about 21 euro, this includes shipping to Poland. I have no idea whether this will end up being the Polish version or not, but you could try contacting them if you think it is better than the Danish stores.

Good idea. Problem is if Paradox ships from outside Europe, though it should get through the minimum value barrier. It's definately worth a shot. Alternatively I can get something sent to my family in Denmark and have them ship it to me. Could end up cheaper.
Well, I just made a discovery on the Paradox webpage which I hadn't seen anywhere else. Apparently HoI2 Doomsday is a stand-alone expansion meaning it doesn't require the original game... meaning it'll be a lot less problematic. It also seems like all the original material is in it making it quite a good deal.
