Seriously, though, I love the variants that make you approach the game in a different manner. The aztec extreme adventure on inland sea and the stagnation game are great examples. No-Alphabet space race was another great ideas.
Now, these aren't any full-fledged ideas in their own right, but maybe they will lead to something or inspire somebody else:
I don't want ramble on too long, but the last thing I've noticed is that the best variants for me are the thematic ones. But I understand that they take more work.

Now, these aren't any full-fledged ideas in their own right, but maybe they will lead to something or inspire somebody else:
- Cannot found a city unless you have less temples than cities; cannot found your own religion.
- Cannot build roads.
- Scoring variant: 1 pt for every city with a settle Great Person by 1ad/1500ad/game end/whatever year works best.
