Some Photographs of the Bruce Peninsula

Hi

A friend sent this to me; this series of photographs shows off the beauty of the Bruce to perfection. It doesn't include any of Pike Bay itself, but the rest of the peninsula is glorious. Photo 47 shows one of my favourite hikes - the rock shelves at the left are perfect for swimming from, the natural arch, the grotto and the boulder beach are all visible. Well, the grotto isn't actually visible, being a cave and all that, but even so....

I hope you enjoy these as much as I did. Virtually everything there is within a half hour drive of Pike Bay.

A beautiful place with clear water and all!

Am I the only one who sees Virgin Mary in the reflection of pic 39?

huh

I see standard Georgian Bay shoreline: rock rubble that extends into the water, with a steep drop-off thereafter (the extension of the escarpment).

Should we prescribe meds or ask you to stop taking them? :neenernee

Looks nice. What's the water temperature like in summer?

It depends on which side of the peninsula you are on. The east side (Georgian Bay) is always colder, because the water is a lot deeper. (Within 50 metres of shore it is at least 30 metres deep.) So it ranges, in summer from 'very cold' to 'bracing'.

On the west side (where our cottage is located) it is relatively shallow for a long way out (a couple of kilometres of 2-5 metres deep), so it warms up nicely as long as the wind is from the west, which is the usual direction. When we get a north-easter, though, the lake 'flips' (local slang) and cool water from far out in the lake wells up to make it 'bracing'.
