This has to be considered a shadow because I didn't even start this until a couple of days after the offical closing day.
But since this was a Space Race Defeat (Hanibal) doesn't really matter.
Went with 3 sea tiles each containing a unique health resource (and giving my city access to ocean) and the rest a basic layout of grassland+hill+forest plus a unique resource.
Strategic resources placed on the north.
Chose the basic grains & patures along with the grocery luxaries and gold & silver.
Early:
Started out building 3 work boats while beelining to Bronze Working. Built 2 workers and also built a baracks early on.
Then it was a bunch of wonders; got most of them, but got beat out to Great Lighthouse & Temple of Artemis before starting among others.
Occasionally there would be nothing to build so I would build a milary unit or two while waiting.
As for religion, went with Budism since everybody on this landmass went that way (founded by Isabella, who also founded Confucian); even after founding Christianity, Taoism, and Islam. Hinduism and Judaism were founded on the other landmass, leading to a religious war.
Used great people induced Golden Ages to avoid excesiive anarchy. Got early Representation from Pyramids. So was basically running a Republic - Bureaucratic - Caste System - Budism Organized Reglious state for a while. Free Trade added later, and so was the switch to Emancipation.
Late Rennance: Attack of Suri:
At some point I ran out of portion of the tree that was wonder intensive and started just building military units along with my early switch to Free Religion.
5 turns before I had the tech for Rifling which was in progress Suri decleared war on me. The next turn the Zulu's declared on Suri.
My all hills played a major factor here along with having built Walls, Castle, and the Chichen Itza; His army could only travel one tile per turn once it hit the starting cross; and then he had to waste several turns bombarding my defenses. (And heal since I suicided Trebs & Cats)
The turn before he got them to zero; I had Rifling and mass upgraded everything to Rifles & Calvary. That's when his attack went in:
Result: I lost one Rifle; he lost basically his whole stack (a couple Knights surviving due to retreat). On my turn; it was just mop up to clear my area; then wait to heal and send my forces after him. It was fairly slow going but I auto-raized half his cities including the capital; until Isabel intervened. I then made peace with Suri for all his gold, while he remained at war with the Zulu.
Early Industrial: Attack of Isabell
Isabell's stack was so small that had it been a human I'd have been convinced was a feight and not the main body. As is I let the stack get closer in that I needed to just to be sure there wasn't another stack two turns behind. It was fairly easy to one by one auto-raize her cities after knocking out her two religious cities (including Madrid).
That is until Isabell discovered the tech allowing Infantry when she was down to just two but by then too late for her, it just made taking those last two cites a bit more expensive in Calvary.
Late Industrial: Resume the war against Suri
A few turns after my army got back (and the Rifles upgraded to Infantry along with quite a few additional Infantry trained), Zulu asked for help wiping out Suri. Which I was happy to oblige. Especally because I arranged to bombard the cities to zero; then Zulu would attack knocking out all but one or two defenders and then my stack would mop up for no losses.
Meanwhile on the other contentant:
The Carthaginians & the Holy Roman Empire have been fighting a religious war since before I discovered them; this finally ended a few turns after my war with Suri with Hannibal completely wiping the HRE off the map.
Shortly thereafter Persia signed a defensive pact with Carthage. I decided to sign my own defensive pact with Cyprus as well.
Modern Era: Zulu declares war on me. (And Cyprus) His first stack of doom easily fought off. While recovering from that, he takes over the city on this landmass Cyprus and then sends a second wave. Here he made a tactical error in that that wave was spread in two turns across two tiles, leading to me easily being able to defeat it in detail. For an encore, I sent my own stack to knock out and auto raze his closest city to my borders. A few turns later I knocked out his next closest city along with the refounded one and accepted all his gold for peace.
Space race:
After defeating the HRE, Hannibal's tech rate greatly accelerated. He ended up winning the space race before I had all the techs. Also Zulu kept my workers really busy went annoying spy attacks. For that matter, I think Cyrpus may have had more parts completed than I did.
Hannibal completed the tech tree; so I'm negative a lot.
