[SPOILERS] yuris125 - PBEM55. Travelling around England

That would explain things... but it's annoying

Took Metal Casting from Oracle. Didn't have any immediate needs, built it mostly to deny it to others and annoy Gazglum with my culture, so just took the most expensive tech

Proper update tonight!

So, here's the current situation

The NE

The South. Note the culture pressure from Milton Keynes (the Oracle city) towards Gazglum's northern city

The NW, with the recently founded city of Ely

I'm almost out of land for expansion on the mainland, but there are some nice islands in the east, which is where I'm going to expand next. As you can see, I'm building several Settlers, and eastern islands is where they're going. Just need to make sure I have defenders for the new cities - military is very thing at the moment

Researching HBR to be able to threaten Gazglum. At the moment I don't plan to attack, but want to have the option. After that, research plans are Monotheism, Monarchy, Currency, and Calendar, probably in that order, but will adjust as necessary

Overall, I'm currently 2nd in all major demo categories, behind Ilios. Ilios has been 1 city ahead of me throughout the game, with a significant food advantage. However, he's in the middle of the continent, and it looks like he's running out of land as well. Because I can expand to the islands, I'm pretty sure I can catch up. Also, I always have an option of claiming Gazglum's land - if I can pull off a successful military campaign

It's been a while since I updated. The game slowed down a little due to real life intervening, we only played 6 turns since the last update. The current situation is that Ilios is leveraging his imperialistic nature, and pulling away from everyone. I'm keeping up somewhat, everyone else is far behind

My empire currently looks like this

The NW

The south

The east, including my first island city

With the founding of Sheffield and St. Albans, I'm only 1 city behind Ilios - but his cities are founded earlier, so I'm not actually very close to him

My access to islands is what gives me a chance in this game. Ilios is in the middle of the map, with Whosit and Dhalpir; Gazglum and I are on a peninsula, with a narrow(ish) landbridge connecting it to the rest of the continent. I believe I have a reasonably safe border with Ilios

Thanks to peaks and lakes, ways to approach my border from the west are limited. I have only 2 cities on this border, both on hills, with borders expanded at least once (Ely's borders expanded this turn), so I have sufficient visibility on any possible attack from that side. Ilios's empire is spread across the whole continent, so he's the only one who can actually approach me. Because of geography, he's much more likely to fight Whosit or Dhalpir than me

All this means that the way this game is playing out, the most likely outcome is that I will fight Gazglum, hopefully eliminate him, and settle our peninsula and eastern islands. Ilios will fight Whosit and Dhalpir, possibly eliminate them, and claim the rest of the continent. Then it will be a grand showdown between us at a later point. Of course, assuming I can keep up in expansion to be sufficiently competitive with him

The plan for Gazglum currently is to attack him with Elephants and Catapults. I will finish Monarchy research shortly, and will start on Construction. Maybe Currency first - my economy is still in a reasonable shape, and could be improved if I start working Merchants, but if I continue expanding far off to the islands, Currency will become necessary. Also, doubling up intercontinental trade routes would be helpful. Not sure yet, will decide once I get there. But the current inclination is to go Construction first - I would prefer to get rid of the threat in the south sooner rather than later

Hey Yuri, how do you feel about your position in the game? Concession time, still having fun/vengeance, or what?
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Concession time. Ilios is unbeatable, I saw his stack, his war was successful and mine failed

GG Yuri. I guess we kind of wrecked each others chances, but the map made that all but inevitable. I guess we both learned a lesson about the futility of evenly balanced land wars. You were one step ahead of me the whole game, beating me to circumnavigation and the Oracle by a turn, so congrats for keeping the pressure on. Your second city + religion was also a terrific plant that gave you great map control over the middle, so kudos.

I think you made the right call in trying to take me out, and if you had suceeded you would probably have won. No hard feelings, see you again for a rematch some time.

So, what exactly went wrong Yuris? I saw you as my main rival until you declared on Gazglum. smile
