Adventure 4: Woden's Report COMPLETE

At this point, I am running projects where I don’t have anything necessary being built and will run projects in the remaining cities when their current builds are being completed. I am running industrial projects in cities with industrial zones, naval projects in cities with harbors, and commerce projects in the remaining cities with commercial zones. I plan on turtling and hoping Aztecs or Germany don’t declare war on me, so I don’t have to upgrade any units or build anymore and spend unnecessary gold or production on units.

T223: I captured a settler from the Vikings before I killed him off. I send it to the desert west of Nidaros for a junk city. I don’t think it will become anything because it is too late in the game. I do start a builder in it in case I need anything copped before T250.
T224: Earn a great writer: my hometown boy, F. Scott Fitzgerald.
T225: Get my third themed museum, for another +12 food, +12 production, and +24 gold in Mbanza Nsundi.
T226: Earn a great merchant: John Rockefeller.
T227: Finish Flight, start Steam Power. I also got a Relic by suiciding an apostle against a German one. I got the apostle a while ago that was eligible for the martyrdom promotion and have been sending all over the map. Apparently, nobody was built apostles.  I first sent him down to Monty’s territory but he only had apostles with the same religion. Then I send him over to Gandhi’s, but there was not an apostle or missionary around for ages. Finally, one of Fredrick’s apostles attack another apostle of mine I was using to scout to see if he was building Big Ben. So, I tactfully retreated bring the German apostle towards my other apostle so he could die.  Usually, the land is fully of the AI’s religious units, but here I couldn’t find any for the life of me. I beat I had this guy running around for at least 50 turns. He earned the “Beard of the Evangelist”. Thanks for the additional +2 food, +2 production, and +4 gold in the capital. Weird thing happened when I got it, it was placed in a temple at the former Vikings capital and I had to move it to my capital.  Shouldn’t the temple have been destroyed when I took the city?

T228: Earned a great musician: Johann Sebastian Bach.
T229: Finished Suffrage, start Opera and Ballet. Monty seems to have a fair number of troops around Yerevan, mostly out dated stuff (just left of the Suffrage announcement in the screenshot below). I don’t know if he is think about attacking but I move the few troops I have from the Vikings campaign and in garrison duty at my edges into better positions.

With Suffrage complete, I finally switch out of Classical Republic to Democracy. I did not realize until this point that Democracy not only provides 50% discount on patronage of great people but also provides a 30% bonus yield on projects.  I should have beelined it faster, I probably could have had it 20 turns earlier and had bonuses to more projects. That might have cost me a couple of great people.  Anyway, here are the civics I ran when I moved into Democracy. I tried to use the policies that would provide the most gold. My gold rate jumped from 590.1 to 890.7. I think some of that was from projects because the previous screenshot shows 755.9 gold per turn, but still an increase of 135.2 gold per turn.

I also earned a great engineer: Gustave Eiffel. He provides 2 shots of 480 production to wonders. I should find a wonder to build. I am not going to use him to complete Big Ben because it is almost done and I want to leave it at 1 turn until T249. I have scouting apostles looking to see if anybody is building it and no one has even started it. I definitely will get it since nobody can steal it with this great person.
T230: In between turns, Monty declares war. I am not too worried. He is bringing Pikes and Crossbows. I have Infantry and Calvary in the area and as soon as Big Ben gets down to 1 turn, I will chop out a tank in Mbumbi.  He may pillage Mbanza Nsundi a little but I am no danger of losing any cities.

T231: Finish Opera and Ballet, start Scorched Earth. Earn a great merchant: Sarah Breedlove, who provides +25% tourism for trade routes to other civilizations. She should be helpful after T250 when I shift to chasing a cultural victory.
T232: Finish Steam Power, start Radio. Earn a great scientist: Alan Turning. Also, start eating back Monty’s troops. I use my great engineer to complete the Great Zimbabwe in Mewila, increasing my trade route capacity by 1 and adding +4 gold for 2 bonus resources to trade routes from Mewila. Not a great deal but the extra trade route and gold will help. Also get my fourth themed museum in Mohenjo-Daro for +24 gold.

T233: Earned a great writer: Leo Tolstoy.
T234: Earned a great artist: Angelica Kauffman.
T235: Finished Scorched Earth, started Conservation.
T239: Finished Radio, started Electricity. Also finished the tank at Mbumbi, time to 1-turn kill Monty’s crossbows and start pillaging him to get concessions for peace. Earn a great admiral: Horatio Nelson.
T240: Finish Conservation, start Capitalism. Earn a great merchant: Helena Rubinstein.
T242: Finished Electricity, started Computers. Earned a great writer: Emily Dickenson.
T244: Finished Capitalism, started Cultural Heritage. Also, finally c=got all of Monty’s units out of my territory and started pillaging his lands.
T245: Finished Computers, started Rocketry. Earned a great artist: Katsushika Hokusai.
T246: Finished Cultural Heritage, started Nuclear Program.
T247: In between turns, Monty comes calling for peace. I was able to get all of his gold (719 gold and ~+25 gold per turn) and a relic. Earned a great merchant: Melitta Bentz.

T249: Earn a great engineer: Robert Goddard and a great musician: Liu Tianhua. Finish Rocketry, start Advanced Ballistics. I now switch to complete Big Ben in Mbumbi. I have 35,007 gold in the bank and earning 1,391.7 per turn. I am running projects in most of my cities.
T250: Big Ben finishes and doubles my treasury for a whopping 72,810 gold. This should buy me a few great people. Below is a screenshot of my core. I have 1,711.5 faith and 72,810 gold to buy great people, let’s go shopping.

First, I use my faith to buy the cheap great people:

Great General: Samori Toure (1,320 faith)
Great Writer: mark Twain (315 faith)

Next, I used my gold, buying the least expensive I could:

Great Artist: Jang Seung Eop (2,943 gold)
Great Merchant: Levi Strauss (2,913 gold)
Great Musician: Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (4,713 gold)
Great Engineer: Nikola Tesla (3,985 gold)
Great Admiral: Joaquim Marques Lisboa (4,113 gold)
Great General: John Monash (5,050 gold)
Great Admiral: Togo Heihachiro (5,050 gold)
Great Engineer: Alvar Aalto (5,050 gold)
Great Artist: Sofonisba Anguissola (5,050 gold)
Great General: Marina Raskiova (5,050 gold)
Great Admiral: Franz Von Hipper (5,050 gold)
Great Writer: James Joyce (5,050 gold)
Great Musician: Franz Liszt (5,050 gold)
Great Musician: Antonio Carlos Gomes (5,050 gold)
Great Musician: Frederic Chopin (5,050 gold)

Leaving me 3,018 gold in my treasury. In summary, I was able to buy 17 great people.

In total, I got 66 great people for 66 points. Better than my test game but I don’t know if this will be competitive. I am sure someone will end up with some crazy count in the high 70s or low 80s. A summary post will follow.

Overall, I got 66 great people: 4 great generals, 5 great admirals, 6 great engineers, 12 great merchants, 7 great scientists, 13 great writers, 10 great artists, and 9 great musicians. Excluding the great people, I bought on the last turn, I used all but 1 of the great scientists. I didn’t activate the one that requires a holy site but she was a wonderful scout, exploring much of the northwest and finding 4 goodie huts. I used all the great engineers, great merchants, and tried to use as many great writers as I had slots for. I only use 1 great artist (for sculptures in the capital) and didn’t use any great musicians. Below is the list of great people I earned.

In the end in was earning:
13.2 Great General PPT
5.5 Great Admiral PPT
20.9 Great Engineer PPT
100.7 Great Merchant PPT
23.1 Great Scientist PPT
71.3 Great Writer PPT
54.5 Great Artist PPT
29.4 Great Musician PPT

My Income was 1,513.9 gold per turn with the breakdown shown in the below screenshot. Also, I was Suzerain for all but 1 (Seoul) remaining city-states.

Right now, I have a score of 800 including 198 points from great people, confirming my 66 great people at 3 points a piece.

Finally, an overview of my core cities with all my un-used great people. Just look at my capital with 13 GP sitting inside the city. I don’t think I will ever see that in another game. My other un-used great people are scattered across my lands, as most were seated in the undeveloped land between Mbanza Nsundi and Mbumbi and were teleported elsewhere when Monty attacked.

All in all, this was a lot of fun. I like trying to collect as much gold as possible, reminded me of the Outback Scenario a little.  I might even run through it again now that I have an idea how to do it and where I could improve. Maybe I could get into the 70s and maybe even 80. I do love the idea of variant play and always loved reading through the civ 4 epics and adventures. I figured it was about time to start participating.  I hope my report was not too boring.  I usually run through turns without taking the time to think thing turn and I could tell that I wanted to do that here because I did not take many notes, mostly screenshots. An area I can improve upon. Hope you enjoyed my first report here at RB. In the end, I ended up with 66 points.
