I found the accidental planetary conquest at the end quite amusing (and also fitting with the Hitchhiker's theme).  It amply illustrates how much effect a tech disparity can have.

Great report, as always. Interesting to compare to my game - I stared at a very similar screenshot with the map grid on for a while, trying to decide whether I needed range 5 or not to get from Morrig to Tyr, before coming to the opposite conclusion to you. I think I was lucky not to be badly punished for the delay as I pushed to range 5 - I notice that you managed to get Aquilae in the NW, where I didn't, but that seemed to be all.

After that I was also able to ride my luck more on the diplomatic front - after the initial war/silence/peace cycle the Alkari stayed friendly all game, eventually offering an alliance in the last few turns. I guess some of us make cuter cats than others neenerneener  - but I won't be banking on getting such a smooth ride with the Mrrshans in any future games.
It may have looked easy, but that is because it was done correctly - Brian Moore

I usually check the range between planets with scouts. If I have a scout at either planet, I can click to route it to the other planet (and then cancel after checking ETA). The number of turns ETA is the distance. I also use that trick to decide whether it's better to RELOC a colony ship to a waypoint world, or just send it directly to the target world.

Excellent report of an exceptionally well-played game!

I agree it was a very fun and exciting set-up, but Thrawn (and the RNG) get all the credit for that. I just posted it' he's the one who set the whole thing up. My contributions, apart from those listed in the discussion thread, were just the first-to awards and the easter eggs: Making the Sakkra yellow and name their homeworld Vogsphere and their leader (Prostetnic Vogon) Jeltz; and rename a "no planets" star - whichever one closest to Vogsphere - Sol. My understanding is that Thrawn actually just rolled a random galaxy, executed a script on the save file that would make the relevant edits without giving him spoiler info, and played out the first 25 turns to decide of the map would be a fun one for everyone to play.

My part was just to open the game, take the starting screenshots, play enough of the opening to convince myself the edits hadn't actually broken anything in the save, and then post the scenario. I did make up most of the awards though; Thrawn suggested the one I called "Heart of Gold" and called the Final War one the "Zaphod Beeblebrox Award" very appropriately, so I just ran with it, aiming for fun references to the characters above anything else. Alphabetical order gave me an excuse to list Arthur Dent first, which I wanted to do to signal that the "awards" were meant to be taken lightly: The first one was to get a colony wiped out by an enemy fleet!

And I'll second Thrawn's opinion that your method of taking out the Guardian was stylish indeed. Defeating the Guardian for the first time ever when you're the MoO veteran of longest standing still participating in the Imperia here? You definitely deserve some accolades for that!
