But overall they were incredibly useful, letting me have a naval presence despite not having Triremes for so long

You're correct, I didn't, I was first made aware of this when I read it in your thread. But could you not just move ocean->coast->ocean to stay at full speed, unless I cover all the coast tiles? I'll have to sim this some time to better understand. It's something Kirll introduced with the PB46 naval overhaul, right?

While I can hop in and out, it basically meant that you could have guarded fewer coast tiles when trying to keep my galleys there. Maybe. I just remember one time seeing your Triremes move to cover a potential invasion that I couldn't actually do.

FT and Cornflakes have resumed their war on Commodore, and Commodore has started to reduce the garrison in his island city. I'll see if next turn he's gone down to just one unit. But even the two he has there, I can defeat with 8 HAs and 4 Swords.

And now FT has attacked Ruff, taking a pretty big city according to PBSpy.

With Commodore still adequately defending his island, this might be an opportunity to retake Ruff's island. And it might well have forestalled an attempt by Ruff to take [i/]my[/i] island, as an exploring Trireme found this:

I do outnumber Ruff when it comes to Triremes, so I think I can probably take over the seas.

Invaded Betazed this turn:

Also sunk most of Ruff's Trireme Fleet. I got pretty lucky in that, winning a 28% battle, and two of three 56% battles, but the outcome wasn't ever in doubt there, I had too many Triremes.

I sent him a peace offer asking for Betazed, in case he wants to save the units on the island for the fight against FT.

Now I just need to figure out how to attack the city, no Cats makes any attack like this problematic. When simming against Commodore's island I found using HAs with Flanking to be effective against the Samurai and Xbows he has. But against Axes, a WE, and a Spear, maybe the Swords first is better?

edit: Did a sim, and once again, using the HAs to weaken them for the Swords. I'll lose between at least half of the HAs, but that's fine. The Swords just have such bad odds against the top Axe defender (C2 Sh and full fortify), that they're pretty much useless at first.

Cairo - very sorry about all the double moves. You were right about me being excited with the one where I left the city, DoW and retook the city ... and your comments about what happened were spot on. I should have been checking that blind spot where your galleys hid last turn ... would have been a little different.

Fun game and well done not being eliminated.
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.
