Tibbers? More like infinite "DARKNESSSSSSSSS".
@Gustaran - yup, that was a good game. I remember that Piotr really liked your Taric. And I remember the frantic "GUYS THIS IS THE LAST BATTLE WE HAVE TO GO TO THEIR BASE NOW"

Decided to start playing. Wow, the games do last long, but I like how it's based on teamwork and strategy

What are seasons? Are they like in WoW, that when Season 1 ends, ranked ELO is reseted to 1k? Also, when did Season 1 start and when does it end?
Had fun with MF + Kennen + Amumu (ap) today ^^ We won almost every teamfight. Too bad our tank (not the Amumu) didn't build tank and went 0-9 so we ultimately lost

Sounds like the tank (Amumu) didn't build tank to me

So, I'm curious what people think of 21 points in Def masteries.
The last 2 are pretty lackluster imo. 4% reduction? Bonus to attack? I feel like spending the mastery points in Utility would be better if I'm going pure tank.
If I'm going say Garen or another tanky/dps, then adding points to Offensive tree sounds like a better idea too.
Thoughts?

The last mastery in the defensive tree isn't bad. It adds up if you eat % less damage every time you get attacked, which might matter a lot in, say, laning phase or taking large bursts. You don't really have other candidates if you want to focus on your tanking. Sure, you can run a 9/0/21 Shen (LoCi style) and it will work, but sometimes you will get just tossed around in tougher lanes, so I'd keep the mastery to be safe...
...although my jungler tanks, such as Amumu or Rammus, prefer to run something like 1/19/10 or 1/14/15 or 1/16/13, making use of the Utility Mastery, which I want on most of them. Except jungling Shen (where I'd go 1/21/8 or 0/21/9 because screw buffs I prefer giving to my laners). But I don't jungle Shen, because it's a poor option after his nerfs, and even before that, it was average at most.
Ardor is one of those weird masteries which aren't bad for tanky autoattackers. I'd run it on Mundo maybe, or Jax. Or Kennen if I went 21 defense for the 4% Ability Power, but that's a bit farfetched.
Utility is one of those trees that work on everyone pretty well, maybe except the ninja characters due to all the additional mana masteries...

To me Shen is the archetypical champ for maxing the defensive tree, as mana doesn't matter. Most other tanks have pretty high mana costs and low mana levels, so it seems to me to make more sense to grab mana via masteries and extra tankiness via items, but that may be in error.

See, my problem is the CDR is really nice in Utility. And while ghost/exhaust is epic awesome on Shen, sometimes I have to bring the Clair for the team and un-buffed Clair is touchy.
Granted, for Shen I almost feel like I should splurge on Energy Runes 'cause there's always those times when I just have barely not enough energy to do my sprint a 2nd time that fight.
Anyways, I'm feeling like the Tenacity is worth it since it covers a lot of damage over the course of the game, but in a teamfight that's still only 120 extra HP on a 3k hp tank. Still dunno about the Ardor. 4% AP and AS boost for 3 ranks. But I guess most of the masteries are kinda like that, very incremental tiny boosts.

Meh. Just watch your energy bar and don't spam spells. It's not really worth it to bring energy runes when your setup could make you tankier in the lane and later on, too. Shen no longer has his godly lane dominance to justify energy runes for more Vorpal Blade spam. In general, timing your energy for a clutch Shadow Dash is going to take care of your energy needs easily.

Remember though that you have to factor your effective HP in a teamfight with the Tenacity mastery. Lots of Shens, myself included, like their Warmogs and FoNs on him... so I have more HP than 3000, and it keeps regenerating at a steady pace, which can help during a teamfight and especially after it, since I don't have to recall after a won fight, and I can continue pushing or even tanking turrets.
I generally don't take Ardor on Shen though. Just take the Defensive Mastery for example, which will help you harass without being bothered by caster minions.

9-0-21 is for a more aggressive Shen, usually for a more classical NA tank+support v tank+support, or for tank v tank in top lane in which Shen wins. Going into Defense is for a Shen that is in a lane your team loses who has to have the benefits from Def to win/do well your lane, such as in a Shen+support v the more common now ad carry-support. However, utility tree helps you more mid-late game, with shorter cd on summoners, death timer, ms, etc. On Shen, imo, it really depends on game to game. In most Normal games though, I would run whatever you are more comfortable with. Personally, I run 9-0-21 because thats the way I learned Shen, and I don't feel like I need the 14 or plus points in the Def tree. On the other hand, some people learned to play tanks going Defense tree, so they would play that. So basically what Seyruun said, except I prefer 9-0-21. ^_^
