We just want our throne back Wesnoth SG 2

T16 - Like the sissy elves we are, we bravely turned our tail and fled smile

T17 - Same song, second verse, a little bit louder and a little bit worse

Actually, the main goal is still to get them out in the open where they can be swarmed under. Avoiding night fights with the undead is merely a bonus smile

T18 - See, we weren't afraid:

Ok, so the undead are back down to four units, and we're nearly at full health. Assuming no more surprises, the only tough part will be dealing with walking slooowwwwly across that cave floor.

I didn't manage to promote anyone, but the sorceress, knight, and scout are all close.

The Save

Ranamar, I guess you're up! If nothing more interesting happens but you can't walk to the necromancer fast enough, feel free to take an extra couple turns to finish the scenario.

Wow, that was fast...

I'll pick the save up tonight... and yeah, I estimate 4-5 turns to get to the necromancer and pound him into dust, for better or for worse. Sadly, that'll put us attacking him at dusk.

He's underground, it counts as night no matter what. You'll have daylight for finishing the last of his minions, and then there's one of him and 20ish of us smile.

But yeah, when all I was doing is backing everyone out of range on my first two turns, it didn't take a whole lot of time.

I've seen one or two scenarios where they botched "always night in a cave", tbh... (Yes, I blitzed through something like 7 campaigns in the past weekend. <.< )

They didn't "botch" the night in a cave in this senerio. I don't think they missed any of this campaign either.

Turn reports...

T19:

I figure our (loyal) White Mage needs more experience, so he goes and kills the skeleton with the axe. +8 xp there.

The scout by the axe in the village can't really do anything substantial, either. However, it's 2xp away from leveling up, so he plinks away at the skeleton. Next turn, if the skeleton attacks, he'll level up. Sadly, I think the AI might be too smart for that. (There is no chance, even if all the attacks land at +25%, that the skeleton can kill the scout.)

Versus the archer, I'm torn between my desire to kill it efficiently and get exp on a unit that needs it. Personally, I'm not sure the sorceress needs it. However, after I charged with our knight for no hits, I decided to just send her in, and she very neatly kills it and levels up. I could have probably squeezed a few more xp out of attacking it with elf fighters, but ohwell.

Instead, I moved the resilient elf fighter up to the mouth of the cave with Konrad supporting and the Shyde nearby. He's the only valid target for the necromancer, so I wonder if he'll come out to play. I'd love it if he did, because it'd hose his dodge rating, and I might be able to get our rogue past to get him stuck in our ZOC. lol

Meanwhile, I'm sending our paladins off to the side... they'll heal each other this turn, and the one that needs more healing will go claim a village next turn.

Hahahahaha... The skeleton took the bait. Congratulations to our newest Elvish Rider.

Elves hate caves 50% more than humans, which is to say, spend 3 moves per hex instead of 2 moves per hex. alright
If you're in a cave level, don't bother to recall any elf units with fewer than 6 moves. (Well, except Shydes... for some reason, they only spend 2 moves per step.) Precisely two units can reach the bad guy's lair this turn: Konrad and the aforementioned Shyde. She gets completely screwed for defense on cave, at 30%, whereas Konrad treats it as flat ground at 40%. Guess who's going to go into the citadel and who's going to stand outside next to a skeleton?

Due to "Elves hate caves," I'm inclined to adopt a strategy of "don't @#$%ing bother." Leaving the units lying around, though, just doesn't seem neat to me... However, I've sorted units so those that can make the rush into or next to the citadel in one turn are in place to do so. Everyone else just sort of mills around outside. Our Elvish Rider continues to harass that skeleton for the hell of it, but I've moved him onto a mountain (slightly worse defense) to position him to swipe a village next turn if possible. Also, I might place our thief in position to do backstab damage, although cost-effectiveness feels ... lacking. (Yeah, totally not worth it, even/especially after the anemic damage from the rider... and the skeleton still went after the rider.)

T21:

Our Elvish Rider goes for the village.
Flanking with our Shyde, our Rogue scores a kill.

Ela the Red Mage nukes Muff Jaanal for 30 (leadership-enhanced) damage at great (but not permanent) personal cost. Muff Jaanal now has 18HP left.
Here's where I have to start playing chicken with probability...
Konrad and a leadership-enhanced Elvish Fighter both have 9-4 melee attacks, which will have a 40% chance of hitting. We need two of them to land to win. Alternately, our white mage has a magic beam leadership enhanced at 7-3 and our Shyde has a magical melee attack at 6-2. Any three hits from those 5 attacks (60%) will also win us the game this turn.
The first one has a better chance of winning, but the second one could more predictably land the xp on someone useful. We're going to send the fighter in and finish with Konrad if that's not enough.

Predictably, the elf fighter landed only one hit. At least he got 2 xp out of it. If he'd made the kill, he'd have leveled up. alright
Konrad ably finishes the job.

Now, apologies for not having the rest of the conversation screenshotted...

At the end of the scenario, Delfador shows up. He congratulates us on retaking the city and says that we need a better claim on the throne. Konrad, somehow, is taken aback that he might be king. It's been a long time since I played, but I thought he knew that running from armies trying to kill him for his claim on the throne could only end in taking it himself or his death.

Anyway, Delfador introduces Kalenz, a leader of the Elves. Apparently, the two of them only barely escaped from wherever they were meeting (I now forget...) with their lives. Asheviere's orcs have too strong a hold on the area around the capital, so "We must go where the orcs are not." Also, in order to get a better claim on the throne, we are going to be going on a quest to retrieve the Sceptre of Fire, a legendary artifact of one of the early kings which will, if we find it, garner us more support because it has been long lost.

End Scenario... the next one might only be talky; I'll relate it if it is.

Spoiler for those who actually know the story...
Personally, I don't end up putting Konrad on the throne, but that's mostly for metagame reasons: the princess never gets a ranged attack, so giving her a fireball is better than giving him a fireball, IMO. Also, she has a better dodge, although she's flimsier to make up for it. Knowing this, I'm amused that Konrad is flabergasted that he might actually be king one day.

Yeah, not this campaign... it was one of the newer campaigns that can probably do with a bugreport if I can remember the scenario...

(oh, and more turn report coming above.)

Next scenario:

We have been spotted at a crossroads because it is strategically important to the enemy but we need to get through. We need to go northeast. The Orc leader in the NE corner of the map must die. The one in the south will merely be a nuisance.

However, we also have a few old friends. Delfador is back with his thrown lightning bolts, and we now have Kalenz as a hero we must keep alive as well. Kalenz is an Elvish Lord. As such, he has a respectable sword attack and casts Arcane magic for a ranged attack, instead of the usual bow.

I should go look up how to grab the map. I think it's somewhere earlier in this thread?

Very solid turnsets, Mardoc and Ranamar! thumbsup

Yeah, Konrad never struck me as the sharpest tool in the shed. lol Getting a ranged attack for the princess is much more valuable than adding it to a unit which already has a decent one, who also spends lots of time out of the fighting at our keep. We did a similar thing in our first SG, with giving the Rod of Justice to a thug rather than to the central hero -- why give a nice ranged item to the "already has one, often out of the fight" hero when you can create an uber-unit instead?

Looking at the new map, we certainly ended up with a nice pile of gold. smile If I am remembering correctly, we get lots and lots of orc ambushes on this map so it is a good chance to level up some elves. Fighters and archers both would be useful to have for the future, and newbies mean Konrad, the elf lord, and that elf fighter (did he get that last XP to become a captain?) can provide leadership. Should we try to develop some more mages or shamans as well for arcane firepower?

I believe Fire&Ice is up next in the revised rotation?

Lots of ambushes in the hills, would probably keep to the roads myself rather than fight them all.

2 new loyal elf fighters to pick up.

And finally the choice of rushing the NE or holding a line while we mop up the south then turn to face them. I assume we will kill the south guy first?
