They preemptively declared war and pillaged the road NE of the staging tile. They somehow got metal and had a spear in Mad Dog. My first 2 chariots died without getting a single hit on the spearman. I (probably foolishly) kept throwing my chariots at the units in the city despite this and lost (from memory) 12 of them to kill 2 of their units.
