Well, if they don't plan to be active in diplomacy, what we really should do is use our "time" advantage; assuming we have more time to invest in diplomacy, we can try and stay in touch with more of the opposing teams, etc. and offer incentives for them to ally with us.
All this is speaking way too far in the future, though.
