How about researching Iron Working before Currency? We've used the extra hammers we got while waiting for Currency for military and expansion so it's not a total waste, but having the choice to build wealth before now would have been nice. Sailing before Currency was a good move - France pays for itself, but I'd argue Sailing-Currency-IW-Calender would have given us a better tech rate...
Although if we'd gone straight to Currency I'd have been tempted to lose out on Confucianism to Lewger.
