Re: Circumnavigation, I had a 5-move galley that explored all the way west as possible for me, in what later became the western border with retep. At that point, I feared that retep was actually the runaway power and am glad that I was the beneficiary of a map trade which led to the circumnavigation bonus that was never actually used for anything really productive. Unless, of course, you count the 5-move ironclads which I built before combustion. 
I'll hit on this later in a more detailed post, but strangely enough, my successful war didn't get me enough land to compete with you two. And for the most part, you were both able to acquire that land advantage peacefully or at least with a lot less risk and/or resources. Not a complaint, just an observation.
