I thought about it for a good while, but decided the best thing for the game was for me to remain silent, leaving it up to the group to decide whether or not he was full of it. I know Gaz felt pretty bad once he realized what he had done, so I doubt it is likely to happen again. All things considered though, IIRC that rule was put into place to prevent people from copying a Mod's specific writing style in order to achieve greater credibility, and the wording of the rule strongly implies direct quotes are the problem. Gaz didn't break the rule to that point in my opinion.
Direct quotes are definitely the problem that arose to deal with, but for me the point is being able to invoke the mod to support ones own arguments - because you can't argue with the mod, it's practically Word of God. This allows you to build an a 'fact' that you can fall back upon, and is grossly unfair.
Its something that should be invoked rarely, and only when it is clearly necessary and appropriate. Lying about it is thus hugely problematic for the game.
(I understand that Gaz says he didn't lie. I'm interested in the principled argument here, not specifics.)
