There is a fork in the game when you get a boarding ship...I found that I prefer that play style and rarely play gun ships anymore.  I'd suggest trying to unlock the Mantis ship ASAP to see if that's your cup of tea .  Also if you haven't read it Sulla's tier list is more than that, it's like a mini guide for each ship and worth mining for nuggets.

This ship's spoiled me.
I got a drop of a BL2 pretty early - sector 1 I think - and no auto-scouts. As soon as I could power it up it was pure sex. Then long range scanners (first time!) and I even managed to get the crystal ship quest, I had so much scrap I didn't know where to spend it anymore... Ended the run with 2xBL2, halberd, pre-igniters, cloak+hack... And max engines   pretty nice, with max skills that lets you jump out of sectors before the ASB locks you! Total luck, no doubt, but still - without boarders I doubt I'd have gotten that initial drop!

I doubt I'll beat this anytime soon... Or ever! After this I hope I can go through the engi B without too much complaint!
