played the turn. Built the shrine, JR4 offered OB, I turned him down since he already has Currency. I figure we can offer again once we have it as well, or whatever.

Reoffered OB to JR4. This will help spread Hinduism. I'll do the same for Superdeath. Cornflakes has Judaism and has OB with both Superdeath and JR4. This won't unbalance the trade income much for anyone as we have Currency due in 2t. DZ has only one OB agreement, with wetbandit, but I'm on the fence as to whether that is worthwhile for us. Probably so, as we want as many free spreads of the faith as possible. DZ and Elkad have started a shooting war. There is some WW now between them. This is great for us as it should allow us to pull further ahead of DZ and puts him on the menu at some point if this war is protracted.
For now, our turns remain mostly worker management. The big question for now is whether to continue down the Gaspar Road for Code of Laws and ORG courthouses or sidetrack for Math--> Calendar to increase our happy cap and work more cottages. Thoughts?

maths->calendar is better I think, we've still got plenty of forests to chop so the extra hammers are worthwhile, and more cottages earlier is almost always a good idea.

played a turn because it had apparently been a while. Just kept on building stuff with the workers, set science to Calendar and 0% and stopped all the Wealth builds for what was queued or for units.

Turned tech back on, with some wealth/research builds we should be able to get IW and Calendar in three turns. Getting IW in one turn now, Calendar in 2 turns afterwards. Our GNP is looking pretty nice.

Haven't been many pictures in a while, so here's the empire:
Right now we're just growing with the new and improved happy cap (a trade and Calendar resources coming online), and working lots of cottages.
Our economy is booming, one player is in a GA and when we're at 100% science we're only a little ways behind them. Tech-wise I just got Masonry and will get Priesthood with the overflow while saving again. Next turn should be able to get CoL in a single turn. We make more at 0% science than we spend at 100%, and our power is still respectable. Next tech targets are Monotheism->Monarchy->Feudalism. The next Great Person is due in 28 turns, or sooner if I can get a city with a Library and a Market running max specialists. But that one will be for a GA to swap into better civics (OR, Monarchy, Vassalage/Bureaucracy). After Feudalism I think we should go directly for Guilds and Knights. Actually, thinking about it, I think after CoL, we need Construction and then build up a force of defensive Catapults.
Elkad sent a Copper-Copper deal, I sent it back. No plans for conquest anytime soon and if they want to fight someone else, let them. If Elkad starts winning we can join in. I'm building a Chariot up near the border with him and JR4 to see if Elkad does plan to attack. I wonder if Elkad is going to interpret the Copper-Copper as an ok for a joint attack on JR4? He has units in our territory so he should be able to see that that isn't happening any time soon. Too much border tension to the south to afford a war to the north. I guess Fish-Fish is the normal "let's be friends" message, but I always see Iron-Iron as the one meaning Let's go to war together. Copper-Copper just means "don't attack me bro" in my mind.
Also, Cornflakes has appeared to have forgotten where his EPs are going, since they've been going into us for a while now, despite us not having a border and Cornflakes being at war with SD. So that's annoying.
Anyway, barring a surprise overwhelming attack or someone else eating a neighbor, things are looking pretty good so far.

I was confused, the white border to our north is SD, not Elkad. And Elkad was just declared on by wetbandit, who has Xbows. So I guess he was asking for help? I don't know, in any case I can't do anything now. But seeing Xbows made me realise that we need better military tech. Xbows and Longbows and Maces and Knights are a long ways off, but Catapults and War Elephants are much closer on the tech tree. So I'm teching Construction this turn instead of CoL, and will get HRB next. We'll get a round of Catapults followed by WEs. And I think we can whip some Odeons into border cities to help with the culture wars.

Sorry for ghosting you here. I've gotten busy and going with other things, kids, and I'll be moving soon and adding a 1hr commute so it is unlikely I'll be participating in any substantial way. I'm glad to see that things are going well and may log in here and there to see what's going on. I knew that eventually we'd pull the GNP out of the tank with cottage spam and ORG, it was just a matter of time. How does our tech situation compare to our neighbors? We were at a GNP deficit for a while and had certainly lagged behind others in tech. Are we pulling even and ahead now? Looks that way. What wonders are still out there? Great Library could be nice, and don't forget that we have already unlocked a HE eligible unit so Aesthetics could be a good target too after CoL before heading to knights. And if you do go in that direction, and we have the tech time to spare, Music for the artist and bombing the borders into a more reasonable situation at YeeHawdists could be helpful to us if we have to tussle with JR4. Or just to get OUR second ring back. It hurts my heart to see good riverside grassland go to the enemy over culture.
How would you rate the player positioning in the game right now? Since we're top score, I'll assume the scoreboard doesn't lie for once:
Mr. Cairo 943
wetbandit 929
Cornflakes 916
JR4 902
Donovan Zoi 854
superdeath 749
Elkad 569
Biggest opportunities for improving our position? Who would be the likeliest knights target? I would assume that DZ since he's been warring (I think?) some and is generally less economically developed than wetbandit, who has benefited from ORG and has done good developing overall IMO. But as you say, if Elkad wants to drag someone down with him, and JR4 is the target?, then that could be an opportunity too, albeit with a funky border with the lagging superdeath, who seems to have put too much focus on Mids and not enough on overall development.
Thanks for taking the game. Let me know if you need to be spelled from time to time. I really didn't intend to leave abruptly.

No worries, I have the time apparently, and 45 is taking a while to get started.
Wonders are a good idea, but for now, seeing the warring going on, and seeing wetbandit's Xbows, I want to move beyond just the Phalanx and Spear. That's my immediate priority. But yeah, I can see what Wonders are still available and go after one of them, I haven't checked.
I don't really know how we are on tech compared to the others. I should see how many other civs have Calendar resources. From what I remember we were pretty late to Currency, so it would not surprise me to find we're only even, or possibly still behind on tech with the other leaders.
We're ahead in score because we have the most cities (more than everyone but JR4 who has the same number, but one is that little fishing village you can see in the last screenshot, so barely counts) and first in food. So as I said earlier I think we're in a really good spot long-term, but possibly vulnerable to a determined attack in the short term. Fortunately, one doesn't appear to be coming, but I still want to get some better units. And with some WEs and Cats we might be able to take advantage of the wetbandit/elkad war, if that turns out to be serious.
Best war targets would probably be DZ or SD. DZ is preferable I think, more of a threat and his land is better connected to ours. SD would be easier, especially since he'll probably get into a fight with someone at some point that we can take advantage of, but his land isn't very well connected to ours. I don't know, we're not really in any position to attack anyone and I don't know if we can get to Knights ahead of any potential target. For now I'm focusing on improving our already pretty good economic position. If you're ahead, get aheader.

Well, the wars are over. SD and Cornflakes a white peace, but Elkad managed to extort some cash from Wetbandit:
80/turn seems a bit much to me, perhaps Elkad was threatening to burn a major city or two, even if he couldn't win long term?
The Great Library hasn't been built yet, so after HBR, going up the top of the tech tree looks like a nice plan. Statue of Zeus as well perhaps? Just slow build in a decent hammer city and be happy with it or the fail-gold. Great Library will also be nice for getting the next great person. I do want a GA soonish to swap into better civics. And then the Music GA would be good as well, if I think we can afford to go there before some more military-focused techs like Feudalism or Machinery or Guilds.
Thinking on it though, with no-one looking as though they'r going to eat someone else and get ahead that way, for now I think we can just focus on our economy and tech and try and build an tech lead. Then start attacking people (Rifles and Cavs vs Knight and Muskets for example). As long as we don't get attacked in the mean time, and the others continue to get involved in pointless wars, I think we're in great shape.
Avoiding getting attacked is why I just got Construction and will get HBR next. We need to keep our power level high.
