T-hawk Wrote:Has the server-too-busy stuff improved any since I did that tweaking Friday morning? (I don't know since it doesn't show me that message.) If it has then we probably should leave it off.

Backing up a topic, that "maximum server load" setting would seem to resolve as follows, assuming we are indeed on a shared host. If it's somebody else causing all the server load, we should turn that off to get our fair share of CPU. If it is indeed us causing the server load, it should stay on to be polite neighbors and not crowd out everybody else. Unfortunately I don't have any way to determine that, so I'm inclined to err on the side of caution. Remember that we're hosted for free as a favor to KoP but those others may be paying customers.

I seem to have seen the message less but the amount of time i've been on the forum since Friday is probably not reached statistical significance yet.

The "server is busy" still happens, but much less frequently. I guess we can live with it now for a while, I'd wait with the final verdict for the US evening time, that's when we seem to have the biggest traffic.

We should probably consider giving search the big site treatment ( read - replacing it with google query ) since that's the most resource intensive mechanism in the scripts. There's huge overhead with indexing each new post, cataloging it on per word basis, and then mining back the data when someone searches for something. Search tables usually take well over 50% total size of the forum database.

It happens about as frequently for shorter periods of time.

I hope I'm not the only one who'd be willing to contribute to change that, once KoP is past his medical problems and can think about minor stuff like RB again. I don't have the technical chops to handle the site, but I do have a steady income.

QFT.

It it does end up the case that the message is less frequent that obviously suggests RB was the cause of the issue. Main problem with that theory: why now? We're nice and active, but not 1,000-simultaneous-lurkers-on-Potluck-preoorting-day-active wink

Its probably the redirect malware and crawlers. Can you access the IP/access log T-Hawk?

T-hawk Wrote:- Turned off something called the "Forum Jump Menu" that also supposedly takes server load. I don't even know what that is, does anybody use it?

This feature is one I love. Since it comes just after the final post of a thread it is very natural to just click on that and move on to the next forum I want to check. If it is possible to save, it would be appreciated smile

In regards to general experience I got plenty of server too busy messages this morning when I was browsing.

I'd also be willing to chip in some cash if there was an easy way of making it happen.

I would note that RB is generally busier on weekdays so it may just be the weekend factor. Usually between 3-6pm on the east coast it seems to be at it's worst (from what I've seen anyways) so I'd keep an eye on that time block this week especially.

Not sure where that is in vBulletin, would you know? I didn't see anything obvious in a google search or in the vBulletin control panel. There's a few items related to logging, but it all seems to be server-side stuff like scheduled tasks. There's a menu item "Log Manager" but it says it's disabled unless enabled in config.php, which I don't have access to.

To Darkmantle and others, I'll leave the forum jump menu off for now, but will keep it in mind for when we've solved things more deeply.

You wouldn't be able to access site wide log via vbulletin.

The issue is most likely the server or account being overloaded by the accounts on them so tweaking ours will likely have limited effect. There's no way with how busy this forum is that it's putting too much load on the server.
