And it's STILL hard even with the drake sword.
But isen't that supposed to be the "charm" in that game, too be thrown into an unknown world, not knowing anything and having to figure out things as you go along?

There is a difference between exploring an unknown world and not knowing a darn thing about certain important game mechanics.

Never mind "tiny sealed box with non-functional camera" boss fights

1. The game tries to give you help but it is worthless. For example the guy near the firelink bonfire tells you to go to the undead burg but you would have no idea what he is even talking about. This forces you to randomly wander around and get rapped a few times.
2. Ditch the Drake sword after the bell-tower fight. The fact that you cannot upgrade until much later in in the game makes it inferior to something generic like a +5 battle axe.
3. The camera takes some getting used to but it is okay. Consider not using lock-on. The enemies can move very fast jerking around the camera and disorient you.

thanks Pind, been waiting for that one
decided I might as well get all the other DLC too to support the game since it's a more reasonable price for all the cosmetic upgrades with the sale.
(amusingly I'm just ending up paying the same amount as if I bought old gods at the full price anyway)

Also, the ornstein and smough fight is a major WTF, two bosses with very high mobility and damage and ornstein blatantly cheats by adjusting the direction of his attacks mid-attack... in a fight where taking one hit is potentially fatal due to stun...
finally beat it, feels like it took over 50 attempts

The simplest way to beat this fight on lower levels is to:
1. Summon Solaire. Clear out the room he is in before though. If you are low on humanity it's your fault for wasting it on things other than bosses.
2. Wear the Gaint's set +5, with havel's ring, and run around until you are fighting Ornstien and Solaire is fighting smough.
3. With your Gaint's set you have enough poise to not flinch. Ornstien's really does not do enough damage to justify dodgeing. Just throw out two-handed attacks and when he stops attackinig heal.
4. The second phase is much easier as Smough cannot combo.
This may not work on higher level's but I didn't play on higher levels. The only things that can challenge me at all are this Boss and Manus. I'm not counting this boss... SPOILERS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fArFYRvammw
