[NO PLAYERS] Lurker Thread #115

I'm completely baffled as to why Bob is still feeding REM iron for free. If it was just to spite Jowy, who Bob saw as the game leader, I'd understand, but why continue to do so after Jowy is gone and his replacement is apparently getting wrecked?

Maybe he isn't paying attention or doesn't care.

If he doesn't care, why mention it at all in his update yesterday?

To either feign nonchalance and belie true intent, or to mention it in passing and still not really care? Who knows why Bob does anything he does? The right answer is usually "because he wants to."

Two questions about Cornflakes. First, does he have enough cities for the monk line of wonders to really be worth it? Seems like a lot of expense for limited payback, especially within any meaningful time frame. Second, is he really going to be allowed to survive with cardboard cutouts for defense? He's last in power and it really isn't close. I'm not sure why his neighbors would tolerate him getting ahead economically without carrying the expense of an actual usable army.

That would be a valid use of a blockade for the defender...too bad they banned blockades. Really, why play anymore BTS games at this point? It's things like this that drive me nuts about it. Blockading and successfully cutting off a resource trade (it has to be the iron from Bob, and thus spoiling a bunch of cataphract builds -- perfect when you're being invaded by cataphracts!) is a perfect and valid use of a blockade. That really should be one of the tools in your toolbox when you're fighting a war. Having to completely throw away the option because the area of effect is too big is crazy when the problem (too large AoE) has been fixed and wouldn't have to be banned.

I get that some people may not like all the changes in RtR and ToW, and that's fine. I like a good game of BTS every now and then too. But issues like this have been solved already and really shouldn't have to be a problem anymore. I wonder if there would be any interest in taking only the bug fixes and really obvious mechanics balance changes, like blockades, and having a mod that runs like BTS, only with these few minor mechanics fixes. Not leaders, civs, units, etc., just the core game functionality like what has already been fixed in other mods, leaving out further design changes. There's probably already mods that do that elsewhere, but I haven't gone browsing around for them and I like how we've solved these kinds of problems in ToW and RtR. If people don't like the design changes why not have an option for the fixes so that the mechanics bans aren't necessary? And I don't really have other examples right now, but digging through the change log for RtR and ToW would probably make them quite evident.

No more BTS. More RBTS! (realms beyond the sword?) smile

Well, the obvious step there is a minamilistic mod with different changes governed by game options. But a) that's a lot of work for little reward and b) who decides what options are valid? You have, say, a Weak Hut Techs option - but does it restrict to the first two rows, or to a certain amount times your bpt rate? Does it include religions? Does it remove techs entirely?

At some point, decisions have to be made, and even making them as flexible as possible, people are going to disagree. Which means you need a unified leader, which means some people are going to be unhappy or dissatisfied anyway...so they'll either sit out, or reach critical mass and play BTS anyway.

So you might as well just save time and keep it in RtR/ToW, and let them continue with normal games.

I thought part of the reason people didn't always use mods is that most mods didn't work on Mac? I don't know how many of the obvious changes (blockades, hut techs, events, espionage, maybe Inca/India) require DLL work (I'm not sure about blockades, but the rest should be able to be done in XML), but that might be a big reason why people are still playing base BTS.
