Though we could settle our second city by the coast and sharing the cows I'm considering whether not going inland might even be a better snowball?
For instance we could have a situation like the one depicted below by t29. Here I've gone through anarchy t28 and founded our second city on t29. The city will work an unimproved tile for 1t, but after that the pigs will be improved. With a plains hill plant, pigs and wet wheat it would be quite the worker/settler pump already at size 2. That it's defensively pretty strong while grabbing a fair amount of land and has instant traderoutes (in my iteration) also isn't bad...
I added a t3 save file in case you want to play around with the same sandbox (just a continuation on Joeys wb-file)
I'll be able to sim at earliest during Saturday but my feeling is also that going inland and grabbing more new food would be stronger. Hmm maybe even share ivory and more tiles?
One thing I found strange with the sandbox though is the maintenance for the second city. Could we really have over 4g in distance maintenance? The cities are three tiles apart!
As far as I know rtr-mod also treats toroidal maps as if being cylindrical so that shouldn't influence things. Could it be something with map dimensions that's incorrect in the sandbox??

Heh, was writing my last post as you were posting this and didn't notice until now.
Yeah, I'd say we have two main options for our second city; the plains hill according to last plan or then the tile 1N.
Pros 1N:
Closer to cap -> lower maintenance
On river -> better health, dyke? (7?base hammers), roads not necessary for trade routes
Shares ivory, gets a grass river tile in bfc that might otherwise be left out?
Cons:
No ph-hammer
pigs only in 10t means "much" slower to set up.
less new tiles
worse defensively
movement between cities more awkward due to river
In general I believe that 1N might be slightly better long-term while south option is a better snowball. That 1N shares more tiles with cap I don't see as positive per se as none of the two tiles is likely to be cottaged.
I've played t4, but report will have to wait a wee while.
t4
Our borders expanded this turn and what did we see?
First and foremost we have an inconveniently placed fish in the northeast.
To pick this one up, there is only one place we could settle, namely the C? spot on the map.
Why do I find this inconvenient? Well, I was rather hoping for getting to share some more capital cottages with a site east that could also get at least one lighthousable lake, but no such luck. Like previously mentioned it's also a case against settling city 2 on the plains hill (which I otherwise would be leaning to).
With the scout I also checked out the coast a bit further south and as you can see, we do in fact have a clam for the cow-silk-pigs city!
This city could be put either on the C? sign or then 1S. If we're going to make a bureaucracy capital, I do, however, believe that we need to put the city on the sign in order to share three cottages. (The capital could also be a production monster, but unless we find something truly awesome very soon I doubt it'll be worth the effort of building a new palace etc etc.)
Btw. 3 people that settled on the first turn didn't get a score increase when the turn rolled.
HAK and plako seems to be going BW first
while I think we can congratulate AdrienIer on landing a religion. Please let us start next to him!

It was an uneventful turn.
Scout moved 2SE to reveal mre grassland coast and a sheep resource
In the top5 cities screen Oravainen has fallen from number 1 to number 3.
Looking at demos you can also see that someone has managed to connect a fish resource by now.
What I don't have a good explanation for though is what the guy with 21 GNP is doing? Nobody's at size 2 yet, so I guess it has to be another creative guy working a 3c tile, but can't think of any unimproved such from the top of my head.

And now I'm even more baffled.
Logged in to change the name of the scout and otherwise just take a peek and saw that top gnp has risen to 24!
I mean, no wonders have been built, no religion has been founded, it's impossible to have constructed a worker (and there are no ciV city states from which you can steal one). I simply don't get it.
Lots of rivers down south, looking good. When I suggested sharing ivory with the wheat pigs city I meant 1W to keep the plainhill bonus, not one north. The southern clam-pig spot is good too, but I'm thinking it currently as the 3rd site.
Had a bit of a hangover from a farewell party of a friend so no energy for simming today.
Scout next 2W and start moving eastwards, that'd be my scout move.

Hmm, that is another option that I haven't really considered. Will take 10t before we have the wheat in our borders, but if we go worker first in that city it probably doesn't really matter. Quite a lot of overlap with city3, don't know if that's good or bad. It shares one more cottageable tile with the capital than the eastern ph, but it's a tile that would be shared with city3 anyway, so not that much of a difference.
One thing that's minor, but still good, is that if we settle clams-pig as city 3, capital borders will have popped such that we can chop the city tile for 16h in Oravainen.

I presume you mean 2E?
Personally I feel we have two main choices next turn: 2E or 2N1E. 2N1E would get us quicker back towards fish city, but will reveal less tiles so I would probably go 2E.
