Nothing with Gillette, didn't see a need.

In retrospect, we should have asked for a map swap before signing an NAP with Q:
Now I just need to find the proper video that captures this moment. Until then...
Well, what do we do now? Declare war on Gillette? Near impossible. Tear up our NAP with Q? Tempting. Settle what's left and wait for Gillette to pick us off? Possibly.
In other news, we received a message from Gillette:
Quote:Hi Pirates,
Just a bit of info subsequent to the map swap - I think Trolls have a
settler en-route to the silver-deer island to your north, do you plan
to get Astronomy any time soon? If so we might be able to transport a
settler to the other island near you and gift the city to you in
return for a settler (I don't think city gifting is banned - do you
consider it to be cheesy?)
If you don't plan to get Astro it won't be a good city for you though.
I say we accept it. I was half-afraid that Gillette was fishing for confirmation that we're gunning for Astro, but the map swap already should have made it obvious.

And, about that map ... I knew they must be settling that island, but I did not think they'd have claimed that much yet
Will have to think about this.

I say we don't accept without considering the implications further. One option available is to take the bigger island by force. Accepting the city (which I don't think is in danger anyway) kinda puts us in a bad light if we turn around and take some cities off that island.

Thought about things and I don't think we have the slightest chance of winning if we try to go military. I think in our situation we focus entirely on the economy. I'd swap research path from Astro to get Banks and then the cottage spam civics quicker (free speech, UniSufferage, Emancipation IIRC). Ignore Astro for now. We can't win trying to squabble over the island. We use our commerce powerhouse core to out tech. No more military builds (so that we don't have to pay upkeep).
First tech goal should IMO be Banking, followed by maybe Liberalism/Democracy. 50% gold multiplier building is the next big economic boost. We also should get our National Epic set up in the nearish future.

Agree with building up. Of course, out-tech will fall behind eventually, since Corporations are banned once Communism rolls around bigger is strictly superior. So I think we go back to the Rifle conquest of Q plan.

Just checked - Gillette has Chemistry for Frigates, so naval war is out. M3 is researching Replaceable Parts on the way to Rifling, no offenses there.
Agree with Banking, more for the Mercantilism/Representation synergy and unlocking Replaceable Parts more so than Banks themselves.
So that means for Gillette:

Since we have NAPs with both of our neighbors and Trolls are unlikely to attack... I queued up Wealth in practically every city, bumping breakeven to a little over 80%. Polished off Feudalism, I say we build up overflow with Aesthetics then head to Guilds, Literature, Banking, Constitution.
