Freesquashes seems like a very big town.
In the first shop I sell the silver great axe for over 600coins!
Sun sets, and I am still outside the city walls. But they have a kind of temple here, "The Oracular Temple".
It goes up for another 4 levels, completely empty.
But in the basement I meet "the exalted ape":
(This guy and the holy ship of Empiresstring makes me think that priests get random names as well here.)
Lets explore the basement some more.
... uhm, there is a peasant corpse lying in that corner!
And then I find the treasure!!!
(It does not look like much, but that small room there contains tons of stuff. Coffers, chest, cabinets, bags full of weapons, armor, jewelry, etc. I have never seen something like this before. I was not even aware these treasure rooms existed.)
Now the question is, to loot or not to loot!?

Facepalmed myself right now!
There is a 3D real time viewer for DF called Stonesense.
I tested it out with the fortress mode a while back, but was not really using it, as it is not a proper interface. All your commands and interaction still have to go into the actual DF window.
But people have the stonesense window open in parallel.
So I was just now realizing that it should work in adventure mode as well! If only to create better screenshots!
And here we go.
Harmless with his party in the temple cellars.
I can increase the number of z-levels shown and move upwards to show you the temple above ground as well.
I will have to play around with the fog a bit I think.
Also since it works by reading the complete DF memory state (or something) it contains potential spoilers, as with a single button I can reveal all tile (in the current view), so even rooms which I have not visited or have forgotten about (including occupancy).
I will try to include more of those pictures in the future to make for a better overview of structures and battle fields.

Thanks guys for the feedback.
The thing is, that looting that stack comes with no repercussions at all. It clearly belongs to the temple, but there is nothing in the game mechanics yet that will link those items to, say, the priest. That is why I for example could freely grab leather gear from the hamlets and nick strawberries. These items are not "forbidden" by any game mechanic.
So I was kind of playing it in a variant mode. "You want me to kill that bandit? Well give those leather trousers then. And a handful of strawberries."
In other words, I could "loot" all hamlets and sell the stuff on the market for immense riches! But tat would not be very in-character.
Therefore the question, what to do with the temple treasure, since I have come to Freesquashes to rid the people of a vampire.

Ah I didn't realise that there were no consequences. If you want to stay in character perhaps you could kill the vampire and then take some of the treasure as a reward for protecting the locals.
Really liking the stonesense screenshots.

Use it as a trade station, again you are looking to kill the vampire, so take your reward from the treasure in the form of better equipment, or a reasonable amount to cover better things. Just dont empty the place out

I created a better map of the world. Check it out here:
I will work on a commented zoom in of the kingdom later.
Map of the kingdom created. See Post #5 as well.
I named the towns and hamlets based on the history of dead Harmlesses.
Its actually quite densely populated. Especially the area between Empiresstring and Freesquashes.
Things to do:
o Visit all the hamlets and note their names on the map.
o Visit the dwarves.
o Swim the narrow channel to the NE, just so I can say, I did it.
o Visit the town to the NE (no city walls, but a keep. Similar to Empiresstring.)
o Visit the fortresses (big black rectangulars)
o Visit distant lands. For example the city on the other side of the bay.
o Visit that awesome looking canyon system waaay over to the East (check the big map!) (Now that I can visualise 3D I want to see what it looks like)

Back to the game.
Thanks for the advice.
I will (roughly) do as you say and just equip myself with some basic protection to help me against the vampire.
I grab an iron breastplate, iron greaves and low boots.
I have to be careful not to lumber myself down with too much weight, as this will reduce my speed.
Whether I exchange my bronze sword as well against an iron sword is a subject of long debates.
In the end I stick with my bronze sword, as it has 4 notches in it already.
Unfortunately there is no iron shield here, so I have to stick with my copper shield for now.
Ok, don't touch the gems and the jewellery! Onwards! Who knows what other surprises these cellars hold.
