Not sure on the Knight number, maybe 20-30? But not consolidated in one stack. Several are down near Commodore, a few sit in the cities I took from BRick till I get defensive units there and the rest sits next to xenu. I honestly don't think that I will attack anyone right now, simply because who would make sense? Xenu of course but that opens up a whole lot of trouble as soon as I take him out (for example a front with plako that is 5 or 6 cities long + a front with scooter). Bigger makes no sense right now. I could take maybe a city or two by surprise, but holding them is a different thing. I certainly don't have enough defensive units right now that I could be safe. And having him certainly wanting to get revenge is not really what I want as I need at least one neighbour that is kinda interested in keeping friends with me. Bigger of course will look in my direction, but I don't assume that to happen before not 20-30 turns have passed.
Leaves Commodore. I can do that. And get boated on several places at once. Plus just hand the game to plako or slowcheetah. But it won't win it for me. Not that I think I can do anything to make me win, others have to act in a way that it benefits me for that. But I certainly can make myself lose. Attacking Commodore would be one possibility.
Back to the xenu votes: It is more about that it should have been obvious that I would get elected anyhow. There was no way to believe that I did not have the most votes by far. Abstaining for me is a way to show "I don't care, I'm neutral towards you". But voting for xenu? For me that is equivalent to telling me "I know this does not make any difference but I want to make a point.". And that point most likely is "I am your enemy".
From a pure metagame view, the other players are supporting the less dangerous player in the election. No reason to think 'like' has anything to do with it: they're propping up the underdog.
Cheer up, you're one of the big dogs!
(Edit: I'm not saying other players posted about it, just how I would look at it if I was playing. No lurker knowledge implied or expressed.)
PW if someone is around when Bigger needs his unpause:
xxxxxx
It should go without saying but please be careful not to change ANYTHING. I have set up things in a way that even changing a scientist specialist to a merchant specialist will screw me.
I'll do an update soon. scooter declared on xenu and I hope that will lead some troops away from me. I think he should be able to hold till our peace treaty runs out and than I hopefully can take the mainland cities. Depends of course what scooter does. If he just take the islands from xenu then xenu probably won't move his troops away.
Ok, not going to get to an update today, so I'll try a short overview of the most important parts:
- Commodore is fighting Azza and hopefully not looking in my direction right now. I still have doubled the garrisons near him (2 LBs in every city now, 3 next turn)
- Bigger is also fighting Azza. I think Azza isn't long for this world.
- plako is trying to stabilize after taking so many cities. I think as soon as he comes out of that, he will quickly be the leader.
- I finished Nationalism. I will finish Taj next turn. I'm actually pretty happy about it, because I started it just last turn but did get 385 hammers into it in the first turn due to a massive amount of overflow. Unfortunately not enough to 2-turn it. I would have had to start a turn earlier for that with the overflow-chain.
I will also finish my next GP the same turn Taj finishes. And I will finish Paper this turn. I should probably be able to 2-turn UoS in the capital in a GA (I do 50 hammers without bonuses, probably ~60 with GA and on that I'll get 250% bonus for around 210 per turn. With some overflow from the Taj that might be enough. We'll see. I should also finish another 2-3 GPs in the GA. And Gunpowder. I'll probably go for either Economics (I have already Banking) or for Rifling next. Not sure.
Taj finished, GA began. A few mechanics questions:
1.) In Pacifism I have to buy for every military unit 1 gold. Is that really every military unit or just those that are under the Financial tab not listed as free military units? Right now it states under Unit Cost:
29 Gold: Unit cost for 29 units (free support for 57)
0 Gold: Military unit cost for 44 units (free support for 26)
Will I pay 44 gold or 70 gold?
2.) If I finish a GP in my capital (the first city I settled) and in the same turn another city of mine finishes the next GP-threshold (e.g. capital reaches 602 GPP with 600 necessary for next GP and another city reaches 700 GPP [being last turn under 600 of course]) will I receive two GP in the same turn or it will process the city with the higher GPP-counter first?
3.) Is it worth it to trade 31 hammers for 65 commerce? No, don't answer that one
I am pretty sure, but not completely positive, on the following answers: 1) You will pay for all 70 units. 2) You won't get 2 GP in the same turn. It will overflow into the next turn.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.
1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.
2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.
3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.
4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.
