[SPOILERS] Muffin's spoiler thread of delicious baked goodness and half baked ideas

Cool so game back on track and me being good with reports.

So last pre war new city founded. Actually makes me money - rather good for the tenth city! Mainly because it's best tile to work currently is a lake 2/0/2 tile, but it is a nice filler city that isn't too hard to defend and with a lighthouse will have 3 3 food tiles with no worker input. I'll chop/whip a granary and lighthouse here and then slow build a forge.

At some point in the future, after what I assume will be a successful war, I would like to put a city 1E of the peak there. It would pick up the cow and iron, and fit well with the others around there. But war is a more pressing priority!

Also of note looks like Jowy looks like he might be playing silly buggers. A chance that he may have looked in and out with a war chariot and seen the city is empty and is trying to pressure me, but at size 4 it should be obvious whatever I'm building I can insta whip a spear there. Played it assuming he wouldn't attack, but if he does then it is not too damaging. The long term growth potential for that city is mediocre at best, so whip unhappy is not too concerning there. I also moved an axe to be able to enter the city next turn to prevent a bad roll death. At the point where I can whip out longbow defenders from a lot of my eastern cities I can leave them fairly lightly defended. The new city will have a spear move into it before it can be hit too. Most annoying thing Jowy could do is move towards the cap where I will have to whip it, and it has almost lost all of it's whip unhappy. But it isn't dangerous, just annoying. I don't think he is planning much though as there is no other units on the move that I can see. The only slightly daunting thing is that War Chariots do not count huge amounts to solider count and he has had high prod for a very long time...

Speaking of power, someone has overtaken me. Only happened this turn so awkward to work out whom. Lots of people have spiking power atm so it could feasibly be anybody here. Other demos, GNP still pretty nice with Jowy's tall GA empire the obvious winner here. Crop yield is rather low for 10 city, compared to Bobs/Reteps 11 city empires but I am a huge whipper, plus I still think I don't have many foods around to use. This is also shown in my lowish pop count for the amount of cities.

Finally of note I only just realised the MoM is not in Jowys cap. This I need to plan for as that city may hit fourth level culture soonish. I don't think it will before my attack, but I should be weary of it.

Machinery next turn, and my GE due. I wanted to birth him 1t prior to machinery to screw people over, making them assume that I spent him on machinery. However that is not worth delaying things by a turn (I think I have enough gold to plow through now).

I also tried to do that with my oracle build and HR revolution. Doing it a couple of turns after building it I hope that some people assumed that I chose monarchy rather than MC. All helps to deceive the foes who are trying to work out where I am in the game!

So close to that Guilded safety that I can smell it! Don't anyone declare on me now... Please.

I know the game has been moving slowly but what are your thoughts about the state of the game currently ? Who has the best chance of winning ? More importantly how many phracts do you have, or how soon will you have some ?

We have indeed been moving a little slowly currently. I was planning to update tonight as weekday work nights are slow usually, and I am currently sat doing nothing. However I have left my laptop at my house so cannot put up the screenies that I have ready.

You are globally spoiled so I guess you know what is going on, but I will post my own thoughts on it when I have chance and the pictures to back it up.

However in terms of who could win I think it is wide open actually.

Bob seems to have grown out of his Eco mess, no one wants to mess with pro skirms and his fin boost is coming into his own now (he seems to have little river so the cottages took a while to boost)

Cornflakes has a great tall empire which has just gone CS and if he rushes for Jans could gain a lot of land shortly. His GNP is flying even if the other factors are low.

Retep has org which will get more powerful as time goes on and has the early courthouses to back it up. Then spiritual could really boost him well if he plays it right later.

Jowy/HAK has a great tall empire which has a good amount of Eco and decent soldiers, but seems to be struggling to expand.

Then there is me. I think I am still the most advanced with a bulb, the oracle and high GNP until recently. I have the GLH so I will take less of a hit with small cities and am just about to hit the Eco hard with raze gold and currency.

Essentially I think it all comes down to this war. If HAK and I stagnate then we are both out of it. I struggle to see how HAK can damage me anymore so I don't feel he can come out of this too well. If I can swallow him up at limited cost is good odds for the phracts then I will be very competitive.

As it stands I would say it is between Bob and retep for the top spot atm. Both are big, about 12-13 cities and have good Eco traits. Retep has landed the colossus which will help him and has a lot of ziggaruts, but those are probably inflating his GNP a little. But if the war goes well then I shall be taking the top spot with HAK land. But cornflakes has a lot of GNP and a UU which could make a difference if beelined for. All to play for! Who knows where it could end up going...

So...how goes?

First off, sorry for the late reply commodore. I have had some intense IRL work stuff over the past few weeks that has just finished. I was barely able to get the turns out, and luckily one pitboss ad took over pretty much full time and the other shut down until the other day.

So how goes... Interesting question. Good but bad is the answer.

When Jowy declared I was really annoyed and impressed. Annoyed as I had a longbow that I almost whipped that turn until I realised HBR would come a turn later than I thought to try and maximise useful overflow from whips. That was irksome. I just didn't expect such an audacious attack... I'm still not quite sure how many units I should expect a longbow on a hill to be able to kill attacking amphibiously, but 4 axes seems low to me. Who knows though.

This set me back massively. I lost my iron in a really awkward place to retake, and the ability to make my beelined unit. When Jowy suggested calling it I almost agreed, but then thought that I wanted to at least beat him back. I pushed on and offered Bob a throwaway trade of iron for marble and wine (didn't even occur to me to offer gpt) which he accepted! So I was back in the game. I was building units the same turn I planned to, just without vassalage. I did have to emergency whip a trieme in South Park to make sure that I retained control of the water though. That was painful.

I had planned in hope that Bob would accept the iron trade and had HA builds everywhere. These all got auto upgraded with the iron trade and I whipped out 5 I think on the first turn, and quickly started adding more. I sent a couple with a longbow to try and retake the island, and wondered where to attack. I was worried Bob might cancel the trade, although I was his only OB, and he would have to declare to do so so I didn't think he would.

I actually choose up near Bob above arlen rather than down south to attack. Even though it was over a river, it allowed me to hit half unseen - whilst he could see the cataphracts the workers were hidden in bobs land and roaded one of bobs tiles. The main reason though is that I saw I was rapidly loosing a third v second ring culture war for my horses. Now everyone knew I was building cataphracts I doubt I could have got a horse trade cheaply.

I have been making good progress but it is a struggle - there are just so many units. The issue is I am fighting a war that Jowy prepared a good 10 -15 turns for. I just have so many units to kill. My cataphracts get about 75-80% odds on spears in the cities but I am struggling to kill them all. HAK has been helpful and more than once I thought I would not be able to take a city just as the amount of units in there was so many, but he attacked out or didn't whip in a spear and I have managed to take the city.

Also he has been very defensive. I have been able to leave conquered cities basically undefended to push on, but it is still slowish progress. I wish I were able to attack retep or flakes. Both of them have small armies. Whilst Bob has a smallish army, his skirms are very cost effective in defending vs the phracts... But oh well.

I currently have all but the first three Egyptian cities. I have razed a lot of improvements to keep the tech up. I have a decent amount of workers as HAK has let me capture a few, and an abundance of worker turns so I am not too concerned with rebuilding them. It is sad to burn the villages but retep has wandering units around and I want the gold, plus I am unsure how close HAK will be to engineering. I have been hurting his tech rate and I know he is out of gold but I'm unsure.

Also the other turn retep declared on me... Really not sure why that was. Offered a 10 turn peace treaty. At first I was eager to accept as it gave me security to run light troops in the recent conquests. After sending the save I thought he may want to raze around my cities but that doesn't seem to be the case. Cornflakes is teching well, maybe he wants to have a go at him? And secure his borders whilst doing it. HAK and I are his only OBs though, so he has lost a fair amount of gpt doing that :/

So I am in place to take another city in about 2-3 turns, but he has about 20-25 spears and a few cats and axes, plus iron traded from Bob. I know I can cut that trade as soon as I remove his marble though. With no blockades I need to take the cap to prevent the trade actually happening though :/

I will try to post backdated screenies at some point. But I fear I am letting retep/Bob run away with this... Cornflakes whilst he has a great GNP is just too short citied to be in this I feel. I could be wrong though - maybe he cs hit Jans and pull through perhaps.

I should point out what is holding my whipping Eco together is the GLH. Essentially how you lost 62. Without it I would be barely pulling in 20 gpt.

There is a reason why is is default-banned on many island-heavy setups. Who is giving you OB?

Everyone except my warmate tongue retep a turn or 2 ago with his phantom war dec cost me all his trade routes as now there is no peace bonus, although that is his loss 2 as his only other partner is HAK.

Only Jowy deleted his OB when I built it. The rest didn't seem to mind... Yeah without those I would be pretty much toast from an Eco point - although maybe that would be a good thing. It would focus me more on winning with a whipped army now!

I am also annoyed as I lost the music GA this turn due to turn order frown I went for it with the MoM steal for a cheeky free GA but sadly was not to be. Ah well. I will probably try and birth one from the cap or new New York now.

I'd like to see some of that struggle between quantity and quality, so screenshots would be apreciated. Also some pics about your empire and development level would be interesting, to see what kind of economy and production base you have for warring. Do you think that you could finish HAK fast enough or switch away from him to turn against anyone else?
