This is just a guess but is it that thing windows 7 does to stuff you get off the web for security? In windows explorer can you right-click the save file and go to properties and see if its read only or something?

Good thought OH. Another thought: Commodore, I don't imagine you'd have done this with all the pbems you've played and given it's t0, but you didn't happen to save halfway through, did you? That's caused problems for me before.

Both retep and I have been able to open the save. Me, with my CD-version. So it's probably not on Commodore's end. I could play it, but I agree with Ichabod there's not much point. Got to solve the technical difficulties anyway, I don't want to take the game over.

That's what I imagine. But I'm able to open saves from past PBEM's I've played, so it doesn't make much sense.

Checked and it's not it.

The only other thing I can think of is that I downloaded the Full of Resources map to build a sandbox. The map opened a settings window and maybe that could have bugged something somewhere. That's likely a very long shot, but I can't think of anything else.

Ah, and recently there was a steam update that seemed pretty big. It changed the steam logo, for once. It probably has nothing to do with it, but there is that.

I have the Steam version. If you can email the save to me I'll try to open it. My RB name at the goooooooooogle mail.

I was able to open Ichabod's PBEM starting save from my Steam ("unsupported beta", aka, the prior Steam version). I'm swapping over to the "supported" version and will test again...after the whole freaking game is done loading again....630 MB. Was that really necessary? Why not just download the changed files? banghead

OK, with the "supported" Steam version it immediately crashes to desktop with the message Ichabod was seeing. So I think you'll have to run the prior Steam version. If you already were running the "beta"/original Steam version, I don't know what the problem would be. I can't open old PBEM saves with the new Steam version, either. (OK...switching back to the "beta" version for more testing...and yay a 189 MB download. Um...why not keep both versions saved locally??)

And to confirm, back with the original/"beta" version I can open my old PBEM saves. So it looks like something incompatible with the new Steam version. Gamespy - Breaking compatibility since June, 2014.

I see that it has already been answered, but back when this changed in May it caused a lot of issues for pbems over on civfanatics. You can run both side by side like I do to change between online and direct IP play if you want. I kept a backup of the old files on my google drive that I could link you to if you want ichabod? That way you can add that to the other file set that you have in your steam folder and just name whichever one you want to use as 'Sid meiers civilisation 4 beyond the sword'. But this is only worthwhile if you want to play both online and pbem/pitboss games with the cd version people.

The other way it will be compatible is to not check lock modified assets on starting the game.
