[LURKER THREAD] You're the best around
|
I don't think there's cause for lurker intervention, not at the very least until there's multiple people considering dropping because of the map.
That said, this map is clearly not what the players had in mind. "I want a random map" ≠ "I want to suffer through an unbalanced nightmare created using one of the worst scripts in the game". There are plenty of far more workable map scripts Ceil could have chosen. Scooter hits the nail on the head: Quote:Or at least "yeah I'm good with random and some unfairness, just please don't pick a script that's notoriously impossible to play without heavy editing like, oh I don't know, Global Highlands." When I hear "lightly edited mostly random map" I assume that means you're gonna roll a dozen Fractals or whatever standard script you prefer and pick the best one (PB8/PB13), not pick a novelty script. He's incorrectly assuming that the players actually requested to play on Global Highlands, and that's entirely understandable, because what mapmaker would choose that script, given the option to pick anything else? Ten minutes spent generating maps should have been enough to convince anyone that it was unacceptable for any sort of competitive endeavor. Look, Ceil is obviously a great guy, perhaps second only to Ichabod in being a friendly, accommodating dude, but he made a terrible decision in selecting Global Highlands and sticking with it, and now this game is suffering for it.
It's interesting that Commodore thinks We Demand Food is an island city, when it's actually on OT4E's main continent and very close to his big army. If the city falls next turn, OH is also up for a surprise.

Judging by the screenshots it looks like Commodore's units have already been forcibly removed from the area, or he withdrew them (after the 475 AD image) because OT4E has a HA on the tile previously occupied by Commodore's crossbowmen in Old Harry's picture from 500 AD.

It's really fun to observe how certain players (Mack and TBS especially) adapted their strategies to the map they were dealt.
I don't think it's my place to suggest anything in the tech thread, but why not just abandon the civ to the AI? The BTS AI, while oft-dumped upon, will do more-or-less exactly what everyone wants- whip defenders while attempting to protect itself equally everywhere against all threats. That would seem more equitable than... whatever is happening right now.
I disagree. Having no units is pretty fair in this situation. Having the AI take over just puts 2metra in the worst position and probably doesn't change anything up north.
Look, the biggest reason Commodore is upset is because he is assuming I had a bunch of units around my capital and Cruz to defend against TBS. There were no units there; there never were. He's basing his win condition for this war off a false assumption, and that's probably a bit why he raised a stink about the whippings and deletions -- because he thinks it's changing the calculus, but really TBS was going to fly through those cities anyway. His idea to attack is still solid: you've got a weak neighbor to the south who checked out 50 turns earlier and has been stuck in a stupid war. But if he doesn't content himself with just the cities west of Drumpf then he and TBS are going to come blows and drag everything back down. Also, I'm so sick and tired of being given the ass end of maps (this was like the 3rd or 4th game in a row) that it's getting hard to feel bad about throwing a fit at the end.
