Oh, another one probably has to be the turn from PB6 when the demographic leading team one saw that another team pulled out their cultural victory after all. It isn't so bad to lose, but the kick in the gut feeling here is that they tested for the possibility and their testing gave them the wrong conclusion. I have to imagine that heightened the shock factor just a bit.

Rego triple!
PB5 when Commodore razed Rego's city where Rego was one turn from finishing the great lighthouse. Immediately frustrating for Rego, probably pretty frustrating for Commodore later when he found out what he missed out on by one turn.

I was partnered with Rego in that one too.

Turn 002
The big decision of this turn turned out to be: desert hill or forested plains hill? And I'm a sucker for a heart-warming underdog story, so I went desert:
Everybody has now settled their capital cities. Half of us moved on turn 0, and Black Sword / GermanJoey moved again on t1; it will be interesting to see the different thought processes behind those decisions. I'm sure traits change the calculus a lot, too.
Demos now that everybody has planted:
Quick gleanings: - 3 people have more GNP than us and all 3 of them settled t0. All 3 of the CRE civs settled t0, so I think that's pretty obviously them. The only interesting note from that is it means Commodore is not teching BW first.
- Of the 3 opponents that moved on t0, one of them managed to move to still get a coastal plant. The other two are entirely inland, like us.
- Every opponent is working at least 2 hammers worth of mfg. This makes me think that we're the only civ that settled for a 3f plant and that everybody else has settled in place and is building a work boat, settled in place and using their EXP trait to get a fast worker, or moved to a plains hill, or moved in circles and then moved to a plains hill (TBS version).

When Commodore is in the game? I think we both know the answer to that.

Turn 003
Found something shiny
Blue lines are where i can see coast in the fog. Maybe it is a peninsula? Very narrow regardless. That rice is also not fresh water, so those aren't lakes. I want to scope out that gold and then I'm probably going to send my scout back to the capital, to scout out the area northeast of Trump. Top priority for that scout is finding the best possible second city, but finding the gold makes me really want to settle the rice/clam/silk/cow location and with the third city I can then grab the gold.

Hmm. My guess so far has been that settling 1N of the rice will be the best 1st spot either way. I'm a little leery about settling in a straight line like that for first two spots due to barbarians being on (IIRC they start entering borders when there are roughly 2.5 cities per player) - it'll require more defensive units and more worker turns. The exception to this would be if that's not a peninsula, and you discover a neighbor roughly the same distance from the gold, at which point locking down the gold ASAP is a top priority. There also isn't exactly an abundance of quality options either, so there may be no choice. I guess the weird shape of our land makes barbs spawning in the south less likely.
I've got a couple map theories growing already, but I need to take a closer look at that in the next couple days to be more confident. I think circumnav will be pretty huge this game, but I think there's also a good chance it won't be possible until Galleons.

I think peninsula is looking more likely.
Remember that this is a lightly edited map. If it was custom made I'd be more apt to think this was a narrow isthmus to a southern neighbor. But even the phrase "lightly edited" means different things to different people so who knows how much was really change in sake of balance. So we'll have fun exploring and find out

Well look at the bright side - if we are on our own little lonely island, at least we know it has a few luxuries.

Ugh, I hope it's not an island. Unless everybody is on islands, that would be a trip. But having one person alone on an island without the ability to make contact pre-astronomy while the rest of the world is together is one of the things I would expect to be edited in a 'lightly edited' game.
Heh, but like I said before, who knows how those crazy map makers think?
If the end of the line is in fact the tile south of the rice then we're going to backtrack quite a few tiles with the scout. And even if it isn't the end of the line, I think it's time to backtrack anyway. I want to make sure there isn't a really good site to my northwest that I'm missing just because I locked myself into scouting south first. I don't mind the "wasted" scout movements so much, especially with huts off; I think finding that first city location is more important.
