[SPOILERS] JR4 tries his luck in PB 37

Thanks for the tips on getting information on big enemy stacks.

It looks like there will be a pause today, which suits me just fine. I`m basically always short on time on Tuesdays.

Defending against possible 8 movers is a nightmare. Dark Savant has at least a couple of Great Generals which are not accounted for. I really wish that we could get out of the war but we might be forced to fight it out for longer. Actually, I`m really unsure whether DS attacks us this turn or not. Losing Mist wouldn`t be too bad if we can get an enforced peace deal. Hmm, if the Castle won`t improve our defenses it might be best to swap to something else. If we survive the onslaught. Our other island cities are slightly vulnerable right now, so they basically all whipped a unit last turn. It`s annoying that we don`t get that extra XP on our units but it shouldn`t make a big difference. Losing Radnashiri to a random attack, however, would be awful indeed. I think getting circumnavigation on this map was a good decision. Even if Gavagai were to turn his attention southwards, I still feel that getting peace would be the right call for us. We desperately need to rebuild our economy.

The geopolitical situation is very interesting right now. Carthage is collapsing quickly and all the others want a share of the spoils. An all-out attack of dtay on Krill would have potential to enrage Krill, let`s see what happens.

I`ll look into the question of when to start our second Golden Age tomorrow. At first sight, your plan sounds good to me. 7 turns of gold savings should bring us a lot of ktb. Let`s see if we need to spend the gold sooner than that.. Getting the Oxford University up to speed should help us out in the long run.

The Civstats News Service says:

1) Gavagai did not attack Dark Savant, did not attack us, presumably will not attack us or Dark Savant next turn, quite possibly won't attack anyone (except maybe dtay again?) in the near future, and telegraphed his decision prior to Dark Savant's turn.

2) Dark Savant did not retake Mist. No idea if (or to what extent) he tried, but my guess is that he bombarded the last bit of defenses down and then sat there on the iron, maybe reinforcing the stack some more, but you never know! He might have gone all-in and killed a whole bunch of units (ours or his or both)!

Also, thanks for the overview shots! I feel like I have a better understanding of the tactical situation now (even though it may already be out of date) - also thanks for keeping us up to date on the razings, captures, and other goings-on around the world. I'm sure the other lurkers are grateful too: Based on the rate at which the various threads have been updated, I'm guessing your screenshots and description of what our roving reporter Caravel discovered in the brief Gavagai-GermanJoey war were probably the most complete source of information about it that even global workers had!

Dark Savant didn`t attack, he just reinforced his stack. Also, there has been some drama this turn! I`ll get back to that in the turn report.

TURN 192

Okay, let`s start with the big news. Dtay war-peaced Joey! So the big guns have their back free to target other players. Tbh, that`s not very good news for us as Carthage is going down. I think chumchu is down to 4 cities now. Also, a rifleman was spotted in State of Zijin. So we need to step carefully. Gavagai started a Golden Age and swapped to Mercantilism and Caste.

The troops keep flooding in to Mist. We`ve got 2 C1 Granadiers there now (they could have taken CG1 instead but I think we want to consider attacking out if DS stays put. I don`t think he`s taking Mist but if he attacks it`s probably going to get ugly for one of us.

Borte actually has a single temple only so it couldn`t hire more than one Priest. Therefore we`re working some other specialists in order to get the Catapult up to 49 hammers (a couple of Merchants).

Radnashiri and Kokejin has 5 defenders each, we should probably let them have at least another next turn. I think we`re set up to achieve that and ferry in something like 5 more troops to Mist. We`re very Knight-heavy, which is slightly problematic against all those Pikes. A few more Grenadiers should make sure that the city will remain ours.

Graphs and demos: We`re actually up to 2nd in power now. And still we have this very annoying war that we just can`t get out of. If Joey decides to stab us we could be in trouble to say the least.

So what percentage of the total number of military units in the world do you figure are just sitting on Mist Island staring at each other right now? 10%? 15%? I wonder how much it's costing Dark Savant in unit supply each turn just to keep that stack in our territory. Maybe up to 20gpt? If those stacks ever do fight it out, the power graph is going to look hilarious afterward!

Well done with Borte; my micro above was completely incorrect anyway because I neglected to include the AP hammers. That's 7hpt into units and 9-10hpt into Oxford that I missed! Do you remember how many hammers we have in Borte's part-built Knight right now? [Edit: Either way, getting Oxford by T199 will be no problem as long as the seven universities are finished in time. I ask because if we [Edit2: have at least 56h] in that Knight already, we could potentially finish Oxford by T198!]

Okay, let's look at this in detail. Please let me know if any of these numbers don't reflect what actually appears in the game, as I could still be missing something:

T193: I assume we have no more than 68 hammers in the Knight, so run an Engineer and not a Priest to produce 50 hpt for the Cat.

T194: Cat complete with 28 base overflow. Resume the Knight. Now we have the key question: How many hammers are already in the Knight?
- If 55 or less: Oh well. Oxford will be done EoT198. When we have to start the GA to do so depends on the actual number of hammers involved and which specialists we work.
- If 56-57: Run an Engineer and a Priest and a Citizen(!) to make 103hpt (including overflow). Start a Golden Age; Borte should then (including overflow) be making 115hpt! (It's worth working a citizen for a small number of GA turns to shave a turn off of Oxford, giving us dozens of "free" beakers.)
- If 58 or 60 or 65 exactly: Run both an Engineer and a Priest to make 101hpt (including overflow). Start a Golden Age; Borte should then (including overflow) be making 113hpt.
- Otherwise: Run an Engineer but not a Priest to make 99hpt (including overflow). Start a GA; Borte should then (including overflow) by making 112hpt.
(All of this assumes we have less than 69h in the Knight. Above 68, it gets complicated again.)

T195: Knight complete with lots of overflow. Start Oxford. Specialist assignments will again depend on how many hammers were in the Knight, but it's safe to say we're at least running an Engineer.

Unfortunately, there's only one sure way to win a thread war with Krill: take him out of the game. Otherwise the mix of old war stories, ranting and complaining vociferously about the map* is pretty much unbeatable.

*I'm only guessing in this case, of course - staying unspoiled.

Don't look now, but...

(I took this screenshot around 04:00 GMT today, and far from disappearing, our lead has actually grown since then!)

We're only on Turn 193, and a lot can still change, especially if the leaders turn around after splitting Carthage and do the same to us, but we've been leading in post count for ages, and we just took over the top spot on thread views! Constant updates filled with images and commentary will do that for you. Congratulations, guys! May our civ survive long enough for us to win a Thread War Victory!

Nice! Seriously, I struggle to think of many threads where reporting has been as thorough and consistent as this one. It's good to see that being recognised. Plus, RefSteel's stories, of course.

I noticed yesterday that we were closing the gap on Krill`s thread. We now officially have the most views of any thread in PB37! Very nice, indeed.

The Knight in Borte had something like 63 hammers invested in it (will check when I get to the turn in a few hours), so we should probably start the Golden Age on t194 in order to finish the Oxford University a turn early. That surely is a very good long term investment. Let`s grow our cities a bit now and hold off on the whips unless we have to get out more units asap. Our power rating is very high right now, so I`m confident that we`re not looking like an easy target.

Dark Savant spent half an hour in game this turn and that`s a bit more than he`s done over the course of the war so there is a chance that there will be plenty of action this turn. Mist island might be about to see a gargantuan battle. As of last turn there were about 65 units on the island..
