Oh and I did try this formula out. Unfortunately, only WK and Serdoa currently have Currency, and I only have visibility on a city from Serdoa, shoot and ad hoc. So digging out my trusty Venn diagram, that meant I could only calculate it on Serdoa.
So Total Pop should be Treasury * 3 * cityPop * investigate cost / stealcost / 2 / (their ep + 100)
City Pop = 2
Treasury = 49
Investigate cost = 777
Steal Treasury Cost = 9
Their EP = 140
So that equaled 52.879.
I don't really have any way of determining if that's right or not, but as a comparison (and the following numbers are after I ended turn so I'm not sure if they're off or not)
I have 33 pop which is 16.02% of the world's pop, which means a total pop of 206.
WarriorKnight leads with 28%, which is 58 or 59 (F8 numbers round down to the nearest whole number). So Serdoa at 53 seems like it's at least in the same ballpark.

A valiant second line of defence. What is your whip anger like now?

It's actually not that bad. 1 or 2 faces in most cities. I only have one unhappy citizen - at the capital, and that's from losing the furs. I could whip that away, but with silver and gems (and forges) coming online soon, I figured I'd keep it.
Again, I'm intentionally being a bit risky here. If I'm to have ANY chance at doing well here, I need to expand here. And while that has the chance to burn me (as it has several times), if I can just be spared a few turns, I'll feel moderately secure on my borders.
I think Shoot the Moon has no incentive to continue harassing me now that he has relieved pressure on his core city of Vijayanagra.
Ad hoc maybe, but I did show him my cats, and I hope to show him a crossbow here in a few turns to dissuade him from coming forward.
Of course, I have the save back already so maybe this is all moot by now

That would be plako.

I'm at work so can't really "play" the save till this evening (US Eastern time) but I did peek at it and nobody has attacked me (any further)

Gooooo Creative Ball Courts!!!
Also, I finally was able to refound the island city of Thyme
Man, did that set me back. I think this irks me more even than losing the 2 cities. The 2 cities - that was just impressive force brought to bear on my cities. Losing Thyme though - that was literally a coinflip.
I even had planned to reinforce with an archer when I first took over for meatbalz - but instead diverted my galley to try and chase circumnavigation, which I ended up not getting.
Ah well...
In any case, I was able to shave 1 turn off of Machinery, and I'll have it at the end of next turn. I may even be the first to reach it?
I think that I will probably go next for Currency, Calendar and then I'm pondering a run to Theology

Also, I did put a single Guerilla 1 archer on my sheep tile. It's not meant to be any sort of choke - just more of a sentry so that he can't take the sheep tile without risking loss.
I believe it should defend at 25% hills + 20% G1 + 25% hill bonus = 5.4, up to 5.85 when fully fortified. We'll see if it stands. I may upgrade that to a crossbow as time / money and hammers permit.

Sigh.
As you probably saw in Shoot's thread, he had way more units in the north, and has since flanked my settler and killed him, along with several units.
Obviously any hope I had of getting a city up there is over, and I'm going to be hard pressed to keep him from moving into my core!
I still feel like I had to give it a try though - I've got no other chances here, other than make a bold play. Better to play risky and have a chance of pulling myself back into the game than just hit end turn 100 times.
In other news, WarriorKnight built the Great Lighthouse (unsurprisingly), so I'm glad I didn't really go for that.

I've been lax on updating I know.
Nothing too exciting has happened - I did finish up Machinery and Currency, and this past turn just researched Polytheism (in 1t)
Next turn is Monotheism (also in 1t at 40% science) and then a run at Theology. I just got a Great Scientist to build an Academy (born at this EOT) and I have about 100 gold saved up, so hopefully Theo shouldn't take more than 3-4 turns.
WK just finished Alphabet (seems like an odd tech choice this early on). I'll try to post a screenie later, but he is visibily up on me:
* Priesthood
* Code of Laws
* Engineering
* Alphabet
* Calendar
* Feudalism
* Monarchy
