[Spoilers] Freddy is an Old Giza

Turn 13

Horses! Ouch. Looks like corn needs to be the second city, then needs a obelisk frown. Actually looks like a decent second city though and it needs the borders popping anyway, so I guess it could have been worse. I'm torn over getting Myst or Fishing after BW though. Those crabs or the obelisk five turns earlier?

Then we either settle coast (obelisk)->stone->pig or just go straight for stone (obelisk)->pig and save the coast until later. I'll try the latter at some point to see how it goes.

Will start bringing the scout back to explore the south or heal, or something.

As benchmarks go PB18 had four cities by t50, then fifteen by t100. We won't see that kind of pace here shakehead.

THH - I'm away this weekend, I should be able to play, but will you be around to move the scout for me if not?

I think so.

Hola!

It looks like the lurkers mistakenly think you know your stuff: The land seems to have pretty much the equal (lack of) quality as our PB13 start. With the exception that in this case you have forest instead of jungle so the actual chances to succeed might even be better. nod mischief

Aaanyways, the start will be slow and even more than normally you should optimize for max speed. In this case I think it means that you have to go for a site that has food in the first ring, which basically leaves 2 real options:
  • corn (W of corn)
  • wheat (SE of wheat)

Corn-site's strenghts are 2nd ring horses and ability to share sheep with the capital. However, building an early obelisk in a 2nd city is like kicking yourself into nuts (thrice) and the capital's food resources are pretty weak so it does not really want to share its food + this being BTS you can always double-whip the surplus efficiently.

So basically I'm liking the wheat-city more. You get it settled 1 turn earlier, it has slightly stronger 1st tile and clearly more useful 2nd and 3rd tiles. It also allows you to jump semi-reasonably to your only 6 foodhammer resource, pigs (that's already 1 more 6-foodhammer resource than we had in PB13!!). Actually I'm wondering if you should play greedy-ish and just get the horses from your 3rd/4th city, which grabs pigs and horses in the first ring. In this scenario you could get a relaxed border pop in the corn city from a chop-whipped library. Library fits the plans there pretty well as you could get an early PHI scientist and the city will also have a decent amount of grassland tiles so that you can make it your commerce haven while the rest of your early cities just try to push your expansion as hard as possible.

status: 12.30 AM in Finland, just got back from work, but gf still reads for her exam so it's a good moment to squeeze a bit from sleep.
Finished:
PBEM 45G, PB 13, PB 18, PB 38 & PB 49

I like that wheat site idea - I've done a fairly detailed plan for corn->stone->pigs and the cites settle t36, t52 and sometime later again (but with proper worker support this time) and I'm not happy with the speed. The wheat is a better tile all around, and with those floodplains will make a better long-term city, so my next sandbox run will try your suggestion.

Argh Damn lurkers!

Okay, I think I have some more time for simming today. What line would be most productive for me to iterate on? The wheat?

Okay, currently doing a sim off the wheat start where the cities go down t34 (IIRC), t50 ...

Great stuff! I did t36 for the wheat, so it'll be good to know how you beat that. Do you think pigs or corn is a better third city?

I can probably play this weekend, so you don't have to worry.

Are you on chat?

Edit: Guess not. Next city t59. I settled pigs before corn this sim; workers better in position, better tiles, and gets us a strategic resource sooner if we need it (I settled between horses and pigs, for reference).

Double-checked, it was t34. I just built the settler at size two and roaded to the site. You can get it a turn sooner if you ignore safety with the worker or use the scout to screen so it can build another road.

Ah, I was going for size three because I wanted more commerce. If we don't want myst though the need for beakers isn't so pressing... Does bw come in in time for the revolt while the settler moves?

Yes, it does.

My sim broke down around settling the fourth city because I got sloppy, and I don't have time to fix it right now. I think you can get a Pyramids date competitive with your previous going down this path, though. Now, research became painfully slow in my sim, probably because I skipped Pottery in order to cut out all extraneous techs and try to get to Mathematics as fast as possible scared. If I ran it again I would integrate Pottery, and that would obviously change everything. So it would not be a good idea to follow my sim, but here are some saves anyway:

T34
T50
T59

(Obviously sloppy there in the last one.)

Hope that helps.
