What do you mean? A workboat could easily sail down the river, into the lake and grab the Whales...
Commodore Wrote:For all that, Melville is a bit weak in the food department. Maybe instead settle in between fish and horses south and for clams north?
How about the plains hill between the Horse and the Whales?

Dammit man, can't you just send Mist a PM or IM him? I half read the spoiler because I was quoting your post.

Sorry Illos, forgot you were in XIV. And Ceil, you need to come in more often, we try for puns and malapropisms daily. Of course, at times it's just things that amuse me. Like, for instance, the fact that the game wants us to crash our economy:
Mist commented to me earlier, and I agree, Dostoyevsky should probably be the next settle north or west. We're going to be first to Metal Casing, but not with any confidence of being there far before everyone else, so Colossus ought to be prioritized. We might need to bump it 2N though, because its southern shared forests are going away.
Played with the micro a bit, and we dumped in six hammers this turn to get the Oracle to 36/100 at the end of turn. Four chops for 52 hammers next turn, and we only need a mere 12 to finish it. So unless someone finishes it next turn, we've got Machinery.
That's going to be after spending just half a turn in the classical era. Meet Tony "Die-man" Van, bulber of Metal Casing and enabler of a hopefully worldwide march of horror. Turn 67 seems like a good turn for a Guilds bulb, right?
This, chilluns, is how to beeline cataphracts.

So it's probably not a huge deal, as Scooter's had a ton of these little flurries of activity in his thread and the lurker thread is placid, but...it makes a man nervous. I know that turn 41 is a bit late for the Oracle on this map, but with Hinduism and Buddhism gone, I haven't been watching Captain Crash Econ and his tech. Sure he hasn't beat us to the Oracle, neh? That would be crushing. Bleh, we find out tomorrow I guess.
If only there was someone to distract me...oh hello, Commander Shepard.

So far, so good, although I'm still just mucking about on Mars so I haven't gone very far. I must be getting old, I turned in at midnight with my wife to get enough sleep for work.

Great turn. Firstly, Tony managed to get us into the classical era. Yay for Metal Casing, that's a big mess of beakers out of the way!
In celebration of the bulb, we deforested the entire capital area, sans one preserve. How's 66 hammers sound, Mr. Oracle?
Deforesting aside, foreign policy consisted of me running our warrior away a bit more, and Lewwyn doing is usual Lewwyn thing and discovering Judaism. I hope that was disappointing to someone.
Next few turns should be a lot of whipping, not just for making stuff, but also to suppress score. Serdoa needs to finish the Pyramids fast or we'll start looking like prime dog-pile victims. Thackeray, Trollope, and Dostoyevsky all need to be settled in the next six turns.
Still in all, ought to be pretty safe for now with crossbows....

Indeed! I thought your plan was overly ambitious, with too many moving parts, but I guess I was wrong about that.
Nicely done

Thanks Mardoc! We could have easily been beaten to the Oracle by someone prioritizing it, but with our claim to Buddhism and Hindu Lewwyn's odd preocupation with the 'mids (or maybe Hanging Gardens? He's getting stone for some reason) we figured it was worth the sandbag. It's why I set up the chops to all finish on this turn, nothing would have been wasted at all if someone else snagged it out from under us.
Now the far more random part of the plan, the coinflip for a GE to bulb Guild, is going to be set in motion but even if we "fail" and get a prophet, no really harm done. That's not an all-or-nothing plan.
Now the cataphract focus ignoring all economic techs, that's an all-or-nothing plan although if we can manage the Colossus then we have at least a decent coastal economy to fall back on.
