for leader picks, I think you want all 3 options up front. I will give straight rng rolls.

Do you want to see the options everyone has, for teeth gnashing fun while the map is in progress? (Which is, again, going to take a couple days)

A few days to think over combos would be nice. Angsting over what everyone else gets at the same time sounds fun.

Just for the record: duplicates are allowed, so it is possible that some people get the same leader or civ or even same combo to pick from. Or no?
Personally, I'd like to see what others have, but it is a bit different if the options are revealed before picks are done or after. I think we are supposed to pick "from the darkness".

I have said exactly the same. I never said "we won vote, let it be random", though I have no idea how mapmaker can get out of this situation. My biggest thanks to Ceiliazul for volunteering!

I sincerely apologize for starting this balanced/random holywar. I have clear understanding that we will finish this game and will not come to the similar positions in this question, and therefore I prefer to finish discussion after describing my position again shortly. Balancing map is very hard job for mapmaker, while in random maps things often are balancing each other. For example, somebody gets better leader, the other one gets better position, somobody gets more luxuries, the other one gets more rivers. This is not guaranteed to be balanced in overall view and sometimes results in weird start positions (both too good and too bad), that's why eyecheck is required. But this balance is fragile, and any attempt to disturb this harmony can bring us to even worse result. You cant balance one thing but not touch another, you have to balance everything which is very very hard optimizing task for mapmaker. And what I am trying to avoid is formal approach when mapmaker simply gives everybody everything others have.

+1 for seeing all the combos

I am not planning on duplicates, the discussion circa post 11 about everyone getting joao of inca or whatever seemed unserious. I am proceeding with no duplicates unless some folks feel very strongly that duplicates are needed.

If it makes the mapmaker's life easier I'll happily change my vote. Just give me a worker at the start and we'll call it even wink

You're not saying that a mapmaker's edits could make a map more unbalanced are you? I mean it's possible but extremely unlikely IMO.

The problem arises when you balance some stuff and then are expected to balance everything, which is an impossible task. But so long as the players are expectations are realistic that shouldn't be a problem. Hence I'd generally prefer to allow the mapmaker to make any changes they feel improve things, rather than ask for minimal editing.

I'd agree with the appeal of not simply 'giving everyone everything' though.
