I don't think a culture victory in this game is at all cheesy. I think it's hard and I think that Team #2 will deserve the kudos they get.
It's culture in ALWAYS WAR, vs. 3 human opponents. Incredibly hard.

Agreed! got to give them credit for what they've done. Yes, it would have been incredibly more difficult if T1 would have also mounted an effort to stop it, but it doesnt take away from their epic win.
nearly 9 months of planning and execution - man, that is brutal.

This is the first time I've got to see a game like this in action going all the way down to the ending (assuming it happens, seems pretty much assured at this point), and I'm of the opinion that it is VERY enjoyable and somewhat hilarious to watch. Those comments in retrospect are just gonna be
Though I imagine it's not going to be nearly as fun for the people who have invested so much time into playing the game (other than team 2), but you know, there's always going to be winners and losers in a given game of Civ. It's probably a very rare game where everyone walks away feeling completely satisfied, but at the very least, I find this very entertaining to watch from the sidelines.
Not trying to kick team 1 "while they're down" or anything like that, really. I do enjoy my "dramatic irony," however

Pease for the love of god let's not resurrect the merits of T2's approach. Even I acknowledge the fact it was a) not banned, and b) pursued from the start makes it completely valid. That said, there is no chance I would play in an AW game that had Culture or Space enabled, nor would I play in a regular game that had Diplomatic enabled. I don't mind it if other people want to, but it's not my cup of chimarrão .

Clearly, you are a total chimarrão newb.
You drink chimarrão from gourds, not from cups.
Kiding aside, I liked the expression. :neenernee

I think there are a bunch of reasons that T1 wouldn't have had a clear cut lead if they had understood what was happening and acted appropriately: T3 still had GA to catch up with, T1 needed to invest in an army and not infrastructure, slightly different techs paths etc. I don't think T3 would have been in the lead, but I do think they would have had a real chance of winning.
If T1 had recognized the CV threat and gone for intervention, wouldn't that also mean they would end up with a sizable chunk of Team 2's land? Most likely including Milkshake, which has some useful wonders in it.
Yes, their huge infrastructure drive would have been delayed (at the very least). Just how to estimate the difference...I have no idea. Just have to go with gut feel. I think T1 would still have been in a better position overall than T3, but it would have been a very narrow gap.
On the "what if T3 stopped T2 in time" aspect, I noted Sulla mentioning in his last post just how rapidly his military strength was growing over the last few turns. I hope we can get some more info on that at some point for analysis compared to T3, although I would certainly understand if T1 didn't want to even look at these saves again for at least a few days.

The same would be true for Team 3 though.

To all you people suggesting that a cultural victory is cheesy and should perhaps be banned: What a ridiculous notion. If the game were to be played over, I guarantee no one could win the way team 2 did this time. Novelty was an essential part of their plan. It's SO not overpowered (though it may be a real part of the metagame).
