Hey guys. Looked on Reddit, didn't see a prominent Master of Magic thread, so I created one: https://www.reddit.com/r/Master_of_Magic/ . Let's spread our fun experiences with this game.
I have many fond memories of the old MOM, even though I hadn't played it all that much and barely understood the mechanics. I just loved the customization and depth (many races, spells...), and I always felt that 'more games should be like MOM,' but I never started properly playing it again.
I just knew that the swords/magic attacks and hearts were good on units and heroes. Shields and crosses were probably situationally useful, or something. This led me to believe that... I believe he's called Malleus the Magician(? fiery redhead) was an absolute god and must-have, cause he had a lot of attack power (probably because of arcane power and items, now that I understand more) and one-shotted nearly everything. This also made me laugh at the wimpy chaos beholder ball things, as they only had 1 attack. Until I sent in my army which it completely obliterated without taking any damage. I'll never forget that, and it made me seriously respect those random abilities (gazes, etc) that I didn't understand.
I just learned that the Magician isn't even a champion, and that there are many heroes with way more potential. He was probably just the first one I happened to seriously boost.
Recently I was reminded of MOM and thought I'd give it a shot, to see if the game was actually that good or if it was just nostalgia. Well, it was both, as many things were quite lacking (AI, etc). But then I found this community and the Casters mod which does some serious work to make it an actual proper, well rounded game. I can't believe it's still being played and worked on, and am delighted and grateful.
I still suck, but at least now I have a better ability to comprehend and learn, which will allow me to enjoy the game even more.
Malleus should be a champion.
With his guaranteed Arcane Power he ultimately shoots through the magic immunity of a Sky Drake.
And his Flame Strike eliminates most enemies quickly and efficiently.
He is a Fame 5 hero, but it makes him better than all Fame 10 heroes, all Fame 20 heroes, and half of the champions.
Of course it does depend a bit on the random picks, giving a couple of heroes a small chance to turn out stronger.
I'm dither. I first learned about Master of Magic a few years ago, my wife bought it for me on a whim at Good Old Games. I became quietly obsessed with it, and since I was a returning student working on my first degree at the time I didn't really look too hard for "modern updates," I just enjoyed the game I had. When I switched my major to Computer Science though, I started really looking for modern takes on Master of Magic and was surprised (but not too surprised) to learn there was basically nothing.
I graduated a few weeks ago, and I've been (also quietly) working on a Master of Magic project because huh-duh, it's basically the greatest thing ever. Why even get a CS degree if you aren't going to make games, amiright?
I recently downloaded the source for Implode's multiplayer MoM remake, and I'm excited to see what kinds of things he's done. I don't want to reinvent the wheel but considering how long he's been working on it, I doubt I'll be able to contribute anything meaningful to his project.
Honestly I'm not sure that anyone who likes the original Master of Magic would like my project because I don't really want to remake the game. War games (even Civilization clones) have changed a lot in the 25 years and I want to incorporate newer ideas, as well as older ideas -- ones that MoM didn't even include from Civilization -- like I dunno, global warming and stuff. I'm playing fast and loose with specific spells because I'm still "early" in development but I think it would be cool to have an epic spell like a Biblical rain storm that causes water to rise all over the world.
Speaking of the world, I attached an image of some worlds I generated -- elevation maps, don't let the colors fool you (blue is still water though). Two things you can notice right off the bat are A) sphere-like worlds, and B) hexagons. I'll experiment with different sizes of worlds throughout development but one of the things I want to do is have more than the two parallel worlds -- I want to have five. I dunno if Fourth Edition Dungeons & Dragons is (was?) popular here but I draw a lot of influence from D&D and I want to include worlds representing the Material Plane, Feywild, Shadowfell, Astral Sea, and Elemental Chaos.
At the end of the day it will probably be more like a roleplaying game (or whatever Mount & Blade is) than "Civilization meets Magic: the Gathering," but I always kind of liked that aspect of MoM anyway.
So, ... that's already probably more information than should reasonably go into a welcome post, but I don't know if I'll post much (here or anywhere, really) at all. I just graduated after all and I'm looking for jobs. Working for free on remaking an abandoned franchise for a dead company doesn't pay the bills and if I have to choose between working on the project and posting on a forum I really have to go with the former. I'm not being glib, just... realistic.
Maybe if we can ever drum up enough support we can Kickstarter the thing. I dunno. Someday.
I've been playing master of magic game since, well since as long as I can remember. It fits squarely into a group of comfort games that I always seem to come back to. This list of games includes Heroes of Might and Magic 2/3, Majesty the Fantasy sim, Might and magic 7, (Bizarrely) Zombies, GRUNTZ and several others.
I have visited these forums in the past to marvel at and play the various mods that have come out, so I figured it was about time to finally register.
Anyway my favorite memory of master of magic happened when I was a kid, I started an island map, and immediately found the summon great wyrm spell! I proceeded to romp my way through the land, destroying everyone in sight! It was the fasted game I ever played!
I played MOM for the first time not long after it came out. I certainly had fun with it then. I played it again a few times in the intervening years. I kept watch for mentions of successors to MOM. WOM (so sad) was the most recent one I noticed. After reading about it, I loaded MOM again, but when I got the starting screen up, and thought about the choices available (been there, done that), I just shut it down and didn't play.
I came across the mention of Slitherine buying the rights to MOM. Following up on that led to this forum. I don't know whether Slitherine will accomplish what so many have failed at, but at least I've discovered COM. That has me excited again. The mod seems to correct quite a few of MOM's problems. What had me most excited were the AARs where the players were playing well, but still losing, and not just because of ridiculously high bonuses for the AI. I've just started playing, but I can see hours disappearing, with 'just one more turn'.
COM is making me hate cloudy days. I'm off-grid (middle of the woods in central Alberta) with a small solar power system, so I can't use my relatively power-hungry main computer for long. MOM does run on my cloudy-day computer (Raspberry Pi3), but it's painfully, painfully slow...but only draws ~2 amps.
Maybe COM (and other mods and improvements) will keep me going until a true successor to MOM is released.
Hello, all. I've been playing this game for 25 years. It's certainly evergreen! I'm glad it's lived on, in emulation. So happy there is still a community surrounding it.
joined the this forum after just beating the game and i got some few things to ask
so was it thats it ?? i kinda feel the ending is very anticlimatic lol like 10 second of cinematic and that was it xD
and what does the final score does ?? does it unlock anything or is it just kind of like highest player score in arcades ??? i only got 3-5k everytime so does it do anything if you get it maxed out ??
and finally should i play caster of magic ? how different is it compared to this ?
Hi. I found this forum looking for a discord on Masters of Magic. I have been playing the CoM mod on the GOG version, it looks like there's now a CoM II. I noticed that Klackons and Lizard men should be able to make Armorer's Guilds but for some reason couldn't. Also that they can make Wizard's guilds but not produce wizards. If anyone has insight into this problem on CoM I would appreciate the help. For Com II do I need to buy it on Steam to use it? Is there multiplayer capability now? If there is a discord could you post the link? Glad people are still enjoying this game.
