Ichabod Wrote:Settling a city in the north would be a pain for worker micro (and to defend too), I think. But there's no good options in the south and you probably need a strategic resource.

Depending on your work force, you could go first to the sugar city, which is easier to improve (road + better city tile + shareable tiles) and then something north. If you have good amount of workers, going somewhere north can be better. I really hate the placement of the corn, it makes it too difficult to share with any decent cities... :@

The map is pretty though to dotmap, there's no "easy" settling places.

Edit: I think a city grabbing dear + horse in the first ring and gems in the second could work, even if it wouldn't be riverside. Would it make tiles unusuable near the capital, though?

I took this screenshot by setting my FIELD_OF_VIEW variable to 70 in my CivilizationIV.ini file.

It wouldn't, so that could work. I realize now though that Nico is playing Egypt, so grabbing copper would be preferrable to grabbing horses.

Also, the gems/wet corn site in the northeast is a tempting reach. lol

I think you're right, changing my mind from my email - I'd been looking for strategic resources to figure out where he'd put his city, but the copper really isn't in a nice place frown

C&D will come tomorrow morning, I've been out and don't drink & C&D seems a good rule wink

He researched Meditation, founded Buddhism, grew his capital to size 4 and his second city to size 2, popped the borders of his second city for 7 land tiles (which only rules out planting on the dyes) and built a Warrior (with overflow from whatever he whipped last turn).

Seven did none of the things (but he did get land points). Nor did Mackoti and he didn't even get any land points.

Nicolae ... well, as well as his land points, he got another 2k power rise. So maybe he built two Warriors in a row (it would only bring him up to 3 in total). Or maybe last turn he researched Hunting not Mysticism - this is looking more plausible than it did before we knew that the Horses are next to the Deer. Particularly given he's Egypt.

I'm wondering if he's settled the city Ichabod proposed - horse+deer first ring, gems 2nd. That's pure speculation tho smile

Here's an updated sandbox that I've played around in a bit.

Some observations.
1. A copper city is awkward, and definitely needs a border expansion. Which means a wasteful monument or Monotheism for Judaism or a hindu missionary. At any rate, if I'm settling a decent copper city it will take some time to get the copper online.
2. If I'm going to continue expansion I really need Pottery so that I don't tank my economy, which means Monotheism for my next city will take too long.

So I'm considering teching Pottery after Polytheism, and then Hunting-Archery. I can settle my next city on the sugar, and the one after that by horse/deer. It's not perfect, but it may be worth it to invest more hammers in archers and chariots, and in return I get to settle the good city sites first.

Another option I'm looking at is building 'Henge in my capital. I'll probably tech Archery regardless. And if I miss on Henge, no biggie, failgold is useful too. Serdoa's probably going for The Oracle so I may have a good shot at Henge.

Some questions/commentaries:

1. Is it possible to get SH on your second city? It's a good city, it has chops and food. The main benefit of getting it there is getting massive culture on the city in the direction of your main threat, Nico's WCs. I don't expect to see many bronze units soon, due to that awkward copper placement.

Just remembered that you'll probably get a religion there, so this may be overkill.

2. if you are going for SH, would it be between 3rd and 4th settler, I believe. This seems to fit with a strategy of getting a 3rd city that doesn't rely on a border pop to be effective (like the sugar one) and getting the 4th city in a place where culture is needed. What about that spot 2E of the copper? Grasslands aplenty, 2 calendar resources, copper and wheat. only problem is that everything useful is in the BFC. Is it possible/worth it to get that spot as city number 3?

3. After those cities, I think you should expand in the direction of marble and get fishing (before pottery?) -> sailing looking for calendar as soon as possible. Calendar means a lot of happiness (with already settled cities, considering the sugar and the copper city) and MoM, which will be heavy in such a cottage oriented map.

4. This map is really tight (spelling?). That northern corn near the gems are the one you "stole" from Nico. I wonder if SH is worth the hammers + time here. Man, some WCs from Nico could really hurt someone. Luckily, early warfare oftens lead to defeat, especially in quick speed.

SH in your second city would make you reach the gems from Nico in just a few turns... I don't know what to make of this, but it's certainly interesting.
