I logged in late at night and a bit tired when I shouldn't have. I forgot I needed to wait for nane to play. I haven't moved anything:

I need him to play so that he has a chance to move his worker. Hopefully he plays before I wake up, otherwise I might have to ask for a pause. (He has played early morning Germany-time before.) For the record, I didn't move anything when I logged in the first time. I forgot the game state until I saw the worker.

"Sometimes things just gotta play hard." PBSpy tells me I spent 30 minutes in turn. I'm pretty sure 25 of those were when I walked away from my monitor swearing up a blue streak. My axe was at 4/5 xp, so had it won, it could have promo-healed (not worried about the spear) and I could have founded my city and kept nane's worker. As it is, I've had to delete the worker (edit: which was originally his settler) and both my warriors. I've pulled my settler back. Horses would be very useful right about now.

Guess we're at war.

Edit part 2: I guess I was way too vague. Nane had moved a settler to the plains hill. That's why I took the swing.

Empi, I realize I never properly responded. Thanks for pointing out the rules to me. I now realize why people here and at Civforum were so insistent that I knew! lol But in the end, it was the choice between a 50% chance at the city from the coinflip or an 85% chance from the attack. (I used a combat calculator before I declared war.)

But let it now be war to the knives:

As we all know, 1-pop whipping axes in Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is a sure sign of success. bang

For the record, I made a mistake with the axe+workers on the forest. I used the axe to cover them because I was worried about nane's Woodsman 2 axe, but I moved the workers' guard before I moved the northern axe to the city ruins and spotted the axe.  banghead

Nane has positioned his axe in an annoying spot, indicating that he intends to keep fighting for that plains hill. I have steeled myself to whip my empire to the bone in the ancient era in order to fight for that tile. If I get it, I get horses and I cut nane and Holland off from that entire landmass to the north. Ziankali's power is rising and Suite is shooting up in crop yield. I can't look to beat up, otherwise...

(Here's Suite's city count plus evidence that he found an ancient era luxury.  rolleye )

These next few turns are going to be very painful. I wonder what nane's going to bring to the front. (2 turns until graphs on him. I think. Can't remember.)

You're playing as Monty. These things are to be expected. Thanks for the reporting and have as much fun as you can.

Thank you! And don't worry too much about me. Complaining is very much my brand. wink

Nane has reinforced the hill:

The shock axe is annoying. I suspect the woodsman axe will join the hill stack. It takes a very long time for me to get units to the front, and I suspect nane is closer than me. I'm debating with myself about founding 1NW of the pig. He would have trouble stopping it, but the hill plant is much safer from the inevitable reprisal. I've also been thinking about ways I could cut the silver road. That shock axe certainly complicates things.

I wonder if Ziankali is feeling charitable:

lol

I'm 12th in soldier count. To my knowledge, nane hasn't whipped in these past two turns. On his side of the balance sheet, he has shorter travel times and defender's advantage. On mine, I have recklessness, perhaps.

Nane has a second ancient era luxury to my single one and he's Charismatic, so he can whip harder than me. He hasn't yet:

Now, I'm not a suicidal death cultist, so this graph doesn't make me happy per se. But I do smile a bit. Or grimace. Hard to tell.

Nane thinks this war will be over by Christmas:

It's really bad that he can fortify his units on good defensive terrain. (Have I mentioned how bad it was to lose that 15%?) But the end point of all this maneuver is the same. We apply pressure either to the silver tile or to the plains hill. So long as he doesn't outproduce me (which he can. See above.), the math's on my side. The fortification and defensive bonuses will make it hellish, however. Death death death.

Holland looks for an opportunity to repay my earlier axe snipe:

Friend, read the power graph. Also, despite what unhappy feelings you may have towards me, it's good news for you that your neighbors are fighting. Since I don't have horses, I can't dislodge a woodsman axe until muskets. Yes. You read that right. Muskets. Luckily I chopped the forest southeast of Tlaxcala so he can't move in yet. I'll be cranky if he forces me to re-route an axe to kill his but that should be the worst of it.

Unfortunately, no: a mace is 8.8 strength (8*1.1 for Combat 1). A fortified woodsman 1 axe is (strength*(1+terrain bonus+anti melee bonus+anti melee penalty+ fortification) which is 5*(1+0.7+0.5-0.5+0.25)=9.75

I also checked crossbows. frown

(Really, I'm only whining for the sake of whining. wink Two barracks promoted axes clears one woodsman axe.)
