Civilization 5 Announced

Brian Shanahan Wrote:Sid is still a seller, even now. And having his name on it would probably drag in some people, especially if he span the "We weren't satisfied with 2K's direction, and they had big input in Civ V. Here's what we actually wanted" line.

This already happened. "We weren't satisfied with Activision's direction on Call to Power, so we made Alpha Centauri instead." I think history bore out Firaxis and Sid as the winner of that one.

(Brian, I was agreeing with you - if Sid/Firaxis does that, it may well succeed.)

No different than Tiger Woods or what have you. That sort of endorsement was very popular in the days before pro league licensing became so commonplace(i.e. Ken Griffey Baseball, Joe Montana Football, etc.)
Don't forget Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball :neenernee

I'm not saying it will or it is likely, bit pessimistic on the chances. But I'm just pointing out it's possible, and if the series is to further develop probably desirable.

@Gaspar, I'm the same as you with CM/FM been an obsessive since CM97/98.

While that is true now, Madden actually was pretty heavily involved in the creation of the game back in THE DAY lol, including the (at the time) fairly revolutionary idea of having 11 on 11 sides.

Now I'm not saying he had the same level of involvement as Sid, but maybe a step up from say... Bill Laimbeer lol

@T-Hawk I only saw your reply after putting up my second message on the topic. It would have a good chance if done, but will it?

Also wasn't the reason for Firaxis being founded in the first place Sid's disagreements with Microprose?

A new set of patch notes for an upcoming patch has been released.

Some major gameplay changes are in there. Here are some:

-Golden Ages now provide +20% production per city rather than +1 hammer per tile
-Cities must now have three or more tiles in between them (1 more tile than before), unless separated by a sea/coast tile.
-Trading Post gold reduced from 2 to 1 (increases back to 2 when hit Economics).
-Aqueduct added (entirely new building). 40% of Food is carried over after a new Citizen is born.

I'm glad they've realized that city growth is messed up in the earlygame. I wish they would just get rid of the exponential factor in the growth formula. Depending on the cost of the Aqueduct, it could make high production land even more valuable, especially with the nerf to tradeposts.

People are building cities too close together because they can never grow large enough to need their full radius.

I know! Make them have to build them further apart so there will be less cities!!!

Major nerf in production during golden ages.

Personally not into ICS, the affect of this is in my games is likely to be that I won't need to raize any AI captured cities unless it's in a tight island area.

Major nerf to trading posts (pre Civil Service).

Aquaducts are positive. But they have have adjusted Hospitals and/or Medical Centers.
Otherwise:
40% (Aquaduct) + 50% (Hospital) + 25% (Medical Center) = 115% of the food needed to grow: City grows every turn.

Overall though; this continues to leave Farm as the best choice for both Grassland Hills & Plains Hills along a river. If anything these tiles are more valuable than before by comparison.
Also makes farm even better choice for Plains + Flat + river.

GA continues to get extra tile gold but no extra tile hammer : Trading Post still best choice for Plains Hill / Grassland Hill not on a river. (Just less gold until Economics so lower priority)

And unless the city is really short on food, looks like trading post continues to be the best choice for Grassland + Flat + river.

The one difference I see is that this now seems to make Farm the best choice for Plains + Flat not on a river.

Overall, this slows down the early game. At least until the tech for aquaduct is discovered, the buildings built (or cash rushed), and the cities have grown enough with them.
